Almost every SEO agency in Sydney added the letters AI to their homepage this year. Very few changed what they actually do. That makes choosing an answer engine optimisation agency harder than choosing an SEO agency ever was, because the label tells you nothing and the work is new enough that there are no twenty year track records to lean on.
So before writing this list we did what we always do. We ran the searches, read the service pages, checked who publishes pricing, and looked at which agencies show evidence of doing AEO work rather than describing it. We also have skin in this game, because Uprise Digital is on this list. We have marked our own entry clearly so you can weigh it with that in mind.
What AEO actually involves, briefly
Answer engine optimisation is the work of getting a business named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI surfaces a question your business should be the answer to. It overlaps with SEO but it is not the same job. The full breakdown is in our guide to what answer engine optimisation is, and the differences between the three overlapping disciplines are covered in GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
The short version is that AI assistants recommend businesses they can verify and quote. The work is making your business verifiable and quotable, which means structured data, crawler access, checkable facts published in plain text, presence on the third party sources assistants cite, and measurement against a fixed panel of real buyer prompts.
When we studied the Australian AI SEO agency market in August 2026, we found something worth knowing before you brief any agency: agency websites averaged 1.37 out of 6 quotable facts on their own homepages, which is worse than the 1.94 average for ordinary Australian businesses. Plenty of agencies selling AI visibility have not done the work on themselves. That is the first thing to check.
The eight agencies
1. StudioHawk
The biggest dedicated SEO agency in the country, and unlike most large agencies they have built a real AEO practice rather than a landing page. Their Sydney team pitches structured data and AI search strategy as standard parts of the engagement, and they publish free training on AI search through their academy. If you want the safe large-agency choice with process and account management, this is it. The trade off is price and the fact that you are one of many clients. Best for mid sized businesses that want an established name.
2. Uprise Digital (that is us, so read this entry knowing that)
We are a Melbourne based performance marketing and AI search agency working with clients across Australia, with a heavy concentration in solar, construction and professional services. What we would point to as evidence rather than promise: we publish our research openly, including a 40 query study of Google AI Mode in Australia and an audit of 500 Australian homepages, and we build every engagement around a fixed prompt panel measured monthly, so you can see whether AI names you more often than it did at baseline. Plans run from $1,800 to $4,500 a month plus GST, month to month, and the scope is published rather than negotiated in the dark. If you want an agency that treats AEO as a measurable channel rather than a mystery, that is our pitch. If you want a Sydney office you can walk into, one of the others may suit better.
3. Earned Media
A Sydney agency positioning itself around exactly this shift, describing its work as fusing traditional Google visibility with AI-first visibility. They carry strong client reviews and they show up repeatedly in the third party agency directories that AI assistants themselves read, which is its own kind of evidence. Best for businesses that want a premium Sydney-based partner with a content and digital PR lean.
4. Marketix Digital
One of the earlier Sydney agencies to build a dedicated AI SEO service page, naming ChatGPT and Bing Copilot visibility as explicit deliverables rather than folding them into general SEO. They appear consistently in independent roundups of Sydney agencies. Best for businesses that want a specialist conversation about AI surfaces specifically rather than an SEO retainer with AI sprinkled on top.
5. Safari Digital
A well reviewed Sydney SEO agency with 31 Google reviews at five stars and a strong local search practice. Their strength is the foundation layer of AEO, meaning technical SEO, local visibility and structured data done properly. Best for local service businesses whose first problem is being findable at all, since assistants cannot cite a business the ordinary web cannot find.
6. Zib Digital
A larger full service agency with offices in Sydney and Melbourne that has moved its positioning toward AI search readiness. Their scale suits businesses that want SEO, ads and AI visibility handled by one partner. The trade off of full service breadth is usually depth in any single discipline, so push them on specifics if AI citations are your main goal.
7. AIIMS Group
An award winning Sydney SEO agency with over fifteen years of history, now folding AI search into its technical SEO offer. They rank strongly for their own terms, which is worth something in an industry where many agencies do not. Best for established businesses that want a conservative, technically grounded partner.
8. Online Marketing Gurus
One of the largest independent agencies in the country with a big Sydney presence. They appear in most third party lists of top Australian agencies, which matters because those lists are exactly what AI assistants cite when someone asks for agency recommendations. Best for larger businesses that want scale, reporting infrastructure and a large team. Less suited to small businesses that risk being a small account in a big book.
How to actually choose between them
The names matter less than the questions you ask. These five separate agencies doing AEO from agencies selling it.
Ask to see their own AI visibility. Ask the agency to run three live prompts in front of you: ask ChatGPT for the best agencies of their type in their city, and see whether they appear. An agency that cannot make itself visible is guessing on your behalf. When we tested 42 Australian AI SEO agencies in August 2026, Google, AI Mode and ChatGPT each named largely different agencies, and only 19 per cent published a price anywhere on their site.
Ask what they will measure. The right answer involves a fixed panel of buyer prompts, run on a schedule against ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI surfaces, with citation rates tracked over time. Single screenshots are close to meaningless because AI answers change constantly. When we ran identical queries through Google AI Mode twice within seconds, the citations only overlapped 24 per cent of the time, which is why rate based measurement is the only honest kind. The wrong answer is rankings alone, because rankings and AI visibility are related but not the same thing.
Ask what they will actually change. Real AEO work touches your site (schema, crawler access, quotable facts, llms.txt), your presence on third party sources (directories, review platforms, the listicles assistants cite), and your measurement. If the proposal is twelve blog posts a month and nothing else, it is an SEO retainer wearing a lanyard.
Ask about crawler access first. In our August 2026 crawl of Australian business sites, 13 per cent served a normal page to browsers and an error to AI crawlers, almost always because of firewall settings nobody chose deliberately. It is the single most common silent killer of AI visibility and it costs nothing to fix. Any agency that does not check it in week one is skipping the foundation.
Ask for pricing in writing. The Australian market for this work mostly sits between $1,000 and $3,000 a month, with premium engagements above that. We published a full breakdown in what AI SEO services cost in Australia. Treat anyone who will not name a number as a negotiation, not a partner.
What a real engagement looks like, month by month
Knowing the shape of the work helps you judge proposals, so here is what a genuine AEO engagement delivers, roughly in sequence, regardless of which agency runs it.
The first month is diagnosis and foundations. A proper agency baselines your prompt panel before touching anything, because improvement without a baseline is a story rather than a result. Alongside that, the technical layer gets fixed: crawler access confirmed, schema corrected, the six facts published, llms.txt written by hand. Most of the lasting value in the first month is unglamorous and invisible to you unless you ask for the work log, which you should.
Months two and three are the build phase. Content restructured or created so each significant buyer question has one complete, extractable answer. Your profiles on the directories and review platforms that assistants cite in your category get completed and aligned, with your trading name matching everywhere, because assistants verify by exact name lookup and quietly drop businesses that fail the match. If your industry has a register, your entries get audited against your website’s claims.
From month three onward the engagement becomes a loop: measure the panel, publish and earn citations where the gaps are, iterate what has not moved. This is where agencies earn or lose their fee. The honest ones show you citation rates trending against baseline and tell you when something they tried did nothing. The other kind sends you screenshots of the one answer that mentioned you and hopes you never ask for the rate.
Timelines worth holding them to: technical fixes influence answers within weeks because AI systems recrawl frequently. Citation rates on Perplexity and Google’s AI surfaces typically move inside two months if the work is right. ChatGPT naming, which verifies hardest, moves last, often month three to five. A proposal promising everything in thirty days and a proposal asking for a twelve month commitment before showing movement are both telling you the same thing: measurement is not the plan.
A note on Sydney specifically
Sydney is the most contested agency market in the country, and that cuts both ways. The talent pool is deep, but so is the marketing. The city also skews toward larger agencies, which means small service businesses sometimes get better attention from specialist or interstate agencies than from a big Sydney name where they are the smallest account. Since AEO work is delivered remotely by nature, the office location matters less than it did for the handshake era of agency selection. Weight evidence over postcode.
Frequently asked questions
What does an AEO agency in Sydney cost?
Most Australian agencies doing genuine AEO work charge between $1,000 and $3,000 a month, with larger engagements running higher. Only about one in five agencies publishes pricing, so ask for a number early. Be suspicious of anything under about $800 a month, because the work involves research, technical changes and monthly measurement that cannot be delivered at that price.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap heavily but measure different outcomes. SEO earns positions in a ranked list. AEO earns citations in a generated answer. The tactics share a foundation, but AEO adds structured data depth, crawler access work, quotable fact publishing and prompt panel measurement that traditional SEO retainers do not include.
How do I check if an agency is any good at AEO?
Run the test yourself. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for the best agencies of that type in Sydney and see who appears. Then ask the agency to show you a client measurement report with citation rates over time. Evidence beats promises, and in a field this new, an agency’s own visibility is the cheapest evidence available.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Technical fixes such as crawler access and schema can influence AI answers within weeks because assistants re-crawl frequently. Earning citations on third party sources and building new content typically takes two to four months to show up in answers. Anyone promising guaranteed AI placement in thirty days is guessing, because the answers themselves change run to run.
Can I do AEO in-house instead?
Partly. Publishing quotable facts, fixing crawler access and completing your profiles are all doable internally with a good checklist. The parts that are harder to do alone are the measurement infrastructure and the earned mention work on third party sites. Our breakdown of the six facts to publish is in what AI can quote from Australian homepages.
Why does this list include Uprise Digital?
Because this is our blog, and pretending otherwise would be strange. We have marked our entry clearly, put ourselves second rather than first, and listed seven genuine alternatives with honest notes on who each one suits. Run the live prompt test on all of us and let the results decide.
