Perplexity is the AI search engine most likely to cite a business that is not a household name, and almost nobody optimising for AI visibility knows it. The attention goes to ChatGPT because of its user numbers and to Google because it is Google. But when we measured how the three surfaces actually behave across Australian commercial queries, Perplexity cited an average of 17.9 sources per answer. ChatGPT cited 3.7. That five to one difference is not a detail. It changes what strategy makes sense.
This guide covers how Perplexity selects sources, where its behaviour differs from the other engines, and the specific work that earns citations from it. Everything here rests on measured behaviour rather than recycled American guesswork, with the cross engine data coming from our own Australian studies, starting with the 40 query comparison, and where something is genuinely unknowable we say so rather than inventing a confident answer.
Why Perplexity is the widest door
Think of each AI surface as having a certain number of citation slots per answer. ChatGPT’s four slots per answer go overwhelmingly to sources it can verify hard, which is why it leans on government registers and official pages. Google AI Mode’s eight or so slots skew to business websites with extractable facts. Perplexity’s eighteen slots reach deeper than either, pulling in directories, comparison sites, forums, mid ranking business pages and niche content that the other engines never surface.
In our cross engine testing, only 30 per cent of Perplexity’s citations came from page one of the corresponding Google search. The rest came from everywhere else, and its overlap with what ChatGPT cites is small. The practical meaning: businesses that cannot yet win page one, and cannot yet pass ChatGPT’s strict verification habits, can still be earning Perplexity citations now. It is the natural first win in an AI visibility program, and early wins matter for momentum as much as traffic.
One more structural difference worth understanding before the tactics. Perplexity displays its citations prominently, numbered and clickable at the top of every answer, which means a citation there is not just background influence on the answer text, it is a visible link that a motivated researcher actually follows. Referral traffic from Perplexity is small in volume but unusually high in intent, because the person clicking has already read a synthesised answer and wants the depth behind it.
How Perplexity chooses, and what that rewards
Perplexity runs live web retrieval for essentially every query, ranks candidate sources with conventional search signals plus its own relevance layer, then synthesises an answer with inline citations. Three behaviours we observed repeatedly shape the playbook.
It rewards recency more than the other engines. Perplexity’s retrieval visibly favours fresh and updated content, and it frequently cites pages published weeks earlier alongside established ones. Dated content with a visible update history earns disproportionate placement, which makes a maintained page a better Perplexity asset than a static one of equal quality.
It loves structured comparison content. Across our Australian queries, Perplexity cited comparison tables, best of lists, pricing breakdowns and spec style content at a far higher rate than ChatGPT did. Where ChatGPT reads a directory and re-verifies the businesses it finds there, Perplexity often cites the directory or listicle itself as a source. That means third party lists in your category are Perplexity citations waiting to happen, and so are honest comparison pages you publish yourself. We watched competitor published best builders listicles get cited in answers about builders, which we documented in how AI recommends builders.
It barely touches official registers. Government and education sources took around 1 per cent of Perplexity’s citations in our testing against 12 per cent for ChatGPT. Perplexity is not running the register verification that ChatGPT runs. The trust work that convinces ChatGPT is not wasted on Perplexity, but it is not what wins Perplexity either. What wins Perplexity is being one of the eighteen most relevant, current, extractable sources for the specific question asked.
The playbook
1. Foundation, same as everywhere
Crawlable site, working schema, facts in plain text. PerplexityBot must be able to reach you: in our crawl of Australian robots.txt files only about 1 per cent block PerplexityBot deliberately, but 13 per cent of sites block AI crawlers accidentally at the firewall, and Perplexity cannot cite what it cannot fetch. Run the access checks from our AI SEO audit before anything else.
2. Publish answer shaped pages with dates on them
The content that earns Perplexity citations answers a specific question completely, states specifics with numbers, and shows when it was last updated. Update your money pages on a real cadence, quarterly at minimum, changing facts that actually changed rather than shuffling words, and date them honestly. Stale dated content is the one configuration that underperforms undated content.
3. Build comparison and pricing content
This is the Perplexity specific move. Honest comparison pages, X versus Y for the choices your buyers actually face, transparent pricing breakdowns, and best of lists with disclosed methodology, all get cited by Perplexity at rates that justify their existence even before counting their conventional search value. Our own pricing breakdown exists partly for this reason, and comparison content has been the strongest performing content type on this blog for two years in ordinary search as well.
4. Get onto the lists it already cites
Run your ten buyer prompts through Perplexity and note which directories, comparison sites and listicles appear in the citations. Those exact pages are your earned media targets, because presence on an already cited page is the shortest path to appearing in answers yourself. In residential solar, one comparison site appeared in 14 of 16 Australian answers we studied, which makes presence on it close to mandatory in that category. Every category has its own shorter version of that list.
5. Measure it as its own channel
Track Perplexity separately in your prompt panel rather than lumping AI surfaces together, because it moves first. Its recency bias and wide citation net mean your changes show up in Perplexity answers weeks before ChatGPT reflects anything. Treat it as the leading indicator: if three months of work has not moved your Perplexity citation rate, the work is wrong, and you have learned that a quarter earlier than ChatGPT would have told you. Rate tracking across repeated runs, as always, because single answers are noise, as we measured in the volatility study.
A quarter of Perplexity work, laid out
Because Perplexity responds fastest, it suits a compressed plan. Here is a realistic first quarter for a service business starting from nothing, structured so each month’s output is checkable.
Month one is access and inventory. Confirm PerplexityBot reaches your site, fix the firewall if it does not, and run your ten buyer prompts through Perplexity twice, recording who gets named and, more importantly, which sources get cited. That citation inventory is your map: it tells you which directories, listicles and comparison pages currently write your category’s answers. Then publish or update your two most important money pages with the treatment that wins here: direct answer in the opening, specifics with numbers, a visible and honest updated date.
Month two is the comparison build. One genuine X versus Y page for the choice your buyers most often face, and one transparent cost page with real ranges and the drivers named. These two formats earn Perplexity citations at rates nothing else matches, and they compound in ordinary search as well. While they index, work the citation inventory: claim, complete and correct your presence on the two or three sources that kept appearing in month one’s answers.
Month three is measurement and iteration. Re-run the panel on the same schedule and compare citation rates, not individual answers, against the month one baseline. In our experience the pattern at this point is one of two: citations have started appearing, usually on the cost and comparison pages first, in which case the plan is working and the next pages follow the same template. Or nothing has moved, in which case the cause is almost always upstream, access, indexing or pages that describe rather than answer, and the fix sequence is the audit rather than more content.
The quarter costs a few days of focused work spread across twelve weeks, and it doubles as the leading edge of your whole AI visibility program: what Perplexity confirms in month three, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT will confirm over the following two quarters.
What Perplexity citations are actually worth
Honesty about scale: Perplexity’s Australian user base is a fraction of ChatGPT’s, and the direct referral traffic will not change your analytics. Its value is threefold. The users it does have skew heavily toward researchers, professionals and considered purchasers, exactly the high value slice of most categories. It is the earliest moving indicator in AI visibility work, which makes it the honest test of whether your program works. And the content that wins Perplexity, current, specific, comparison rich, extractable, is identical to the content that wins Google AI Mode’s much larger surface, so nothing is wasted. The engine differences and where each fits are mapped in GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
Frequently asked questions
How many sources does Perplexity cite compared to ChatGPT?
In our Australian testing, Perplexity averaged 17.9 sources per answer against ChatGPT’s 3.7 and Google AI Mode’s 8.2. That wide net is why businesses that cannot yet win the other surfaces often earn their first AI citations from Perplexity.
Do I need to rank on Google page one to be cited by Perplexity?
No. Only about 30 per cent of Perplexity’s citations came from the corresponding Google page one in our testing. Being indexed and crawlable is required, ranking well is helpful, and answering the specific question completely with current, specific content is what actually earns the slot.
Does Perplexity check licences and registers like ChatGPT does?
Barely. Government and official sources were around 1 per cent of Perplexity’s citations against 12 per cent for ChatGPT, which runs literal register lookups before recommending regulated businesses. Do the register alignment work anyway, because ChatGPT and buyers both check, but do not expect it to move Perplexity.
What content type works best for Perplexity citations?
Comparison and pricing content, visibly dated and genuinely maintained. Perplexity cites structured comparisons, best of lists and transparent cost breakdowns at a higher rate than any other engine we measured, and it favours recently updated pages over static ones.
How fast can I expect Perplexity results?
Fastest of the AI surfaces. Its live retrieval and recency bias mean new and updated pages can appear in citations within weeks rather than months. That speed makes it the leading indicator for your whole AI visibility program: measure it separately and read it first.
Should I block Perplexity’s crawler over content concerns?
It is your call, but make it knowingly, because the trade is visibility for control. In our robots.txt crawl, deliberate PerplexityBot blocks were rare at about 1 per cent of sites, and the sites blocking AI crawlers were mostly blocking training bots rather than search facing ones. For a service business whose content exists to win customers, blocking the crawler that cites you removes the citation and keeps the content, which is usually the wrong side of the trade. Publishers with content as the product face a genuinely different calculation. Whatever you decide, check that your firewall is not making the decision for you: accidental blocking at the WAF layer is thirteen times more common than deliberate blocking in robots.txt, and it delivers all of the cost with none of the intent.
Is Perplexity worth optimising for with its smaller user base?
As a traffic source alone, marginal. As a channel it is worth it three ways: its users skew toward considered, high value purchasers, its citations respond fastest so it validates your strategy early, and everything that wins Perplexity also wins Google AI Mode, which answered 100 per cent of commercial queries in our testing. You are not choosing between them; you are sequencing them.
