When we ran 40 Australian commercial searches through Google AI Mode in August 2026, every single one returned a full AI answer. Not most. All 40. For the same core queries, the classic results page showed an AI Overview only 30 per cent of the time. That gap is the story: AI Mode is not an occasional feature bolted onto search, it is a complete parallel search experience that answers everything, and Google is steadily walking users toward it. The full findings are in our AI Mode study. This article is the other half: what you actually do about it.
Everything below follows from measured behaviour rather than speculation, and where the honest answer is that something is unknowable, we say so.
How AI Mode actually builds an answer
Understanding the machine tells you where the leverage is. AI Mode takes your query, fans it out into multiple related searches behind the scenes, retrieves candidate pages from Google’s ordinary index, then generates an answer citing a subset of them. Three properties of that process matter enormously.
First, it draws from the normal index. There is no separate AI Mode index to optimise for. If you are not crawlable and indexable in boring old Google, you do not exist in AI Mode either. All conventional technical SEO still applies, which is why the disciplines overlap more than the acronyms suggest.
Second, it cites far more sources than people assume. Across our 40 answers, AI Mode cited an average of 8.2 unique domains per answer, and one answer cited 18. Compare that to ChatGPT’s average of 3.7 sources per answer in the same test. More citation slots means more winnable positions, which makes AI Mode the most accessible AI surface for businesses that are not already category leaders.
Third, its overlap with the classic results page is real but partial. About 40 per cent of AI Mode citations came from page one of the corresponding regular search. That is the highest overlap of any AI surface we measured, but it still means the majority of AI Mode citations come from beyond page one. Ranking well helps and is not required, which is the practical headline of this whole article: pages that never cracked page one can still get cited, if they are the right kind of page.
What AI Mode cites, by the numbers
The citation mix across our 40 answers: business websites 83 per cent, directories and review platforms 6 per cent, forums 5 per cent, social 4 per cent, government and education 3 per cent. Two things jump out of those numbers.
The overwhelming majority of citations are ordinary business websites. AI Mode is not primarily quoting Wikipedia and news at commercial queries, it is quoting businesses like yours, which means the game is winnable with your own pages.
And Reddit was the single most cited individual domain, appearing in 13 of 40 answers. Community discussion carries weight in AI Mode answers about who to hire and what things cost, which has an actionable edge: the threads being cited in your category are findable, and honest, disclosed participation where your business genuinely fits is worth more than another blog post. So is being discussed positively by people you did not prompt, which circles back to service quality and review culture more than marketing.
The playbook, in priority order
1. Confirm you are reachable and indexed
Unglamorous, decisive, first. AI Mode inherits Google’s index, so anything blocking Googlebot or throttling your site caps everything downstream. While you are at it, check AI crawler access generally, because 13 per cent of Australian sites we tested silently serve errors to AI crawlers due to firewall defaults. The two hour check sequence is in our AI SEO audit.
2. Build pages that answer one question completely
AI Mode’s fan out behaviour rewards a specific page architecture. Because the system runs multiple sub queries, a site with distinct, complete pages for distinct questions gets multiple chances at citation, while a site with one broad page gets one weak chance at everything. The average AI Mode answer ran 343 words synthesised from around eight sources, which means it is assembling short factual fragments, not reproducing essays. Structure pages so the answer is extractable: the direct answer in the opening paragraph, specifics with numbers in the body, a clear question as the heading.
3. Publish the facts that survive synthesis
When an answer names a business, the attached details are quotable facts: prices, timeframes, service areas, credentials, ratings. Our audit of 500 Australian homepages found businesses publish an average of 1.94 of the six facts assistants reach for. Pages dense with specific, checkable claims give the synthesis step something to keep. Vague pages get summarised into anonymity. Full breakdown in what AI can quote from Australian homepages.
4. Cover the fan out neighbourhood
Since AI Mode expands your query into related sub queries, the businesses that dominate an answer tend to cover the neighbourhood of the question, not just the head term. For a service business that means the cost page, the how long does it take page, the versus alternative page and the is it worth it page, all interlinked. This is topic cluster logic with a sharper justification than it ever had under classic SEO.
5. Maintain the small external layer that matters
Directories and review platforms took only 6 per cent of citations, but that small slice concentrates in exactly the shortlist style queries where buying decisions happen. Complete and accurate presence on your category’s two or three citing platforms, plus your Google Business Profile, covers most of it. The deeper external work matters more for ChatGPT, which leans on registers and third party verification far more heavily, as we found in our commercial solar study.
6. Measure rates, never runs
We ran identical queries through AI Mode twice, seconds apart, with identical settings, and the cited domains overlapped an average of 24 per cent. Not one of the 20 pairs produced identical answer text. One query went from zero cited domains to 22 between runs. This is the single most important operational fact about AI Mode: any individual answer is a coin flip, and only citation rates across repeated runs mean anything. A fixed panel of buyer queries, run on schedule, rate tracked monthly. The methodology is in our volatility study, and it is the difference between measuring weather and measuring climate.
What not to bother with
A few things the data does not support spending money on. There is no AI Mode submission process, no special markup that addresses AI Mode specifically, and no tool that can guarantee inclusion, so anyone selling those is selling weather. Chasing word counts is backwards, since answers average 343 words built from fragments; completeness and extractability beat length. And obsessing over a single competitor appearing in one answer is chasing the 24 per cent overlap noise. The system is probabilistic. Play the rates.
How AI Mode interacts with the rest of your marketing
AI Mode does not exist in isolation, and the interactions with your other channels are where budget decisions get made, so they are worth spelling out.
With classic SEO, the relationship is inheritance. Everything you have built for conventional rankings, indexability, authority, content depth, carries into AI Mode’s retrieval, which is why the 40 per cent page one overlap exists. Nothing is wasted. What changes is the marginal priority: the next dollar goes further on making existing pages extractable and fact dense than on chasing one more position for a head term, because AI Mode’s citation slots reward completeness over rank.
With your Google Business Profile, the relationship is tighter than most people realise. Local intent queries in AI Mode draw on the same entity data the map pack uses, so the profile completeness work, categories, services in customer language, review volume, feeds both surfaces at once. For local service businesses, the profile is arguably the single asset with the widest reach across old and new Google.
With paid search, the honest answer is that nobody outside Google knows the long game, but the current mechanics are clear enough: AI Mode answers do not currently give you a way to buy citations, which means organic extractability is the only way in, and businesses over reliant on ads have no fallback presence in the answers. If a meaningful share of your category’s queries migrate to AI Mode, an ads only strategy quietly loses its inventory. That is an argument for building the organic and facts layer now, while ads still carry the load, rather than after the shift is measurable in your revenue.
And with your review and reputation work, AI Mode is a direct amplifier: ratings and review language get synthesised into answers alongside your name. The businesses that treated reviews as a map pack tactic are discovering they were also writing the adjectives AI now uses to describe them.
Where this is heading
The strategic read is straightforward. Google has built an AI surface that answers 100 per cent of commercial queries, cites eight domains an answer, and pulls 60 per cent of those citations from beyond page one. That is a redistribution of visibility away from the ten blue links and toward whoever publishes the most extractable, verifiable, complete answers, wherever they ranked. For businesses that spent years locked out of page one by bigger domains, this is the widest door that has opened in a decade. It will not stay uncrowded, and the work compounds, which is the argument for starting while your competitors are still screenshotting single answers and calling it strategy. The wider behaviour shift is covered in how AI search is changing SEO in Australia.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode available in Australia?
Yes, and in our August 2026 testing it returned a full AI answer for 100 per cent of the 40 commercial queries we ran, while the classic results page showed an AI Overview on only 30 per cent of the same core queries. It behaves as a complete alternative search experience, not an occasional feature.
Do I need to rank on page one to be cited in AI Mode?
No. About 40 per cent of AI Mode citations came from the corresponding page one, which means about 60 per cent came from beyond it. You must be indexed and crawlable, but pages that never reached page one get cited regularly when they answer a sub question completely with specific facts.
How is optimising for AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
Same family, different intensity. AI Overviews appear on a minority of queries and sit above classic results; AI Mode answers everything and replaces the results page. The optimisation work is the same, extractable complete answers plus verifiable facts, but AI Mode’s higher citation count per answer makes it the more winnable surface. Our earlier AI Overviews study covers the older surface.
Why do my AI Mode results look different every time I check?
Because the system is genuinely volatile. Identical back to back queries overlapped only 24 per cent in cited domains in our testing, with zero identical answer texts in 20 pairs. This is normal operation, not something you broke. It is also why single screenshots prove nothing in either direction and rate based tracking is the only honest measurement.
Does Reddit really matter for AI Mode?
In our data, yes: Reddit was the most cited single domain, appearing in a third of answers. For who should I hire and what does it cost queries, community threads carry real weight. Honest, disclosed participation where relevant, and running a business people recommend unprompted, both show up in this channel.
What should I do first, this week?
Three things in an afternoon: confirm Googlebot and AI crawlers can reach your site, rewrite your main service page so the first paragraph answers the question with numbers in it, and set up a ten query prompt panel with today as the baseline. That sequence, expanded, is the full audit.
