Most lists of the best digital marketing agencies in Australia are written by an agency that puts itself at number one. No method, no date, no way to check any of it.
So we did something you can repeat. On 12 September 2026 we ran a live Google search in Australia for “digital marketing agencies australia” and “best digital marketing agencies australia”, then asked ChatGPT what a real buyer asks: “best digital marketing agencies in Australia for a service business”. We took the agencies that came back, opened every one of their websites, and confirmed the city and services from their own pages.
Twelve made it. They are grouped by city below, because where an agency sits still changes who you meet and who runs your account. We are one of the twelve and we have said so plainly. We are not first.
How we built this list
Three checks, all on 12 September 2026.
- Live Google results. Two searches set to Australia, in English, reading the first twenty results including the map pack. We noted every agency that appeared with its own site or Google listing, and ignored directory pages and other agencies’ listicles.
- A ChatGPT test. Asked with web search on and the location set to Australia. We recorded every agency it named.
- A site check. We opened each agency’s own website and read the address, the services and anything they publish about price. Nothing here about an agency comes from anywhere but its own site or the search results.
The order in the table is visibility in those checks, not quality. An agency seen in both Google and ChatGPT sits above one seen in a single search. We cannot measure how good these agencies are at the work, and neither can anyone else writing a list like this. Treat it as a shortlist to research. We also pulled Australian search data for the term and sixteen related ones, and those numbers appear further down.

Melbourne based agencies
Clearwater Agency
Clearwater is at Level 6, 19 William Street, Cremorne. It was the only agency to appear in the Google map pack, the Google organic results and the ChatGPT answer, although ChatGPT named it second hand, as an example pulled from a Clutch ranking rather than its own pick. Their site lists paid media across Google, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube, plus SEO, AI SEO and answer engine work, website development, conversion rate optimisation, analytics, ecommerce and email. No prices are published.
SIXGUN
SIXGUN is at Unit 7, 1 Bromham Place, Richmond, and held a map pack spot on the main keyword. Services are SEO in several forms, including AI SEO, local, ecommerce and enterprise, plus Google Ads, social ads, conversion rate optimisation, analytics and content writing. They also list recruitment marketing, which is unusual here. No prices are published, and they quote per business rather than selling packages.
Digital Next
Digital Next is at 133 Buckhurst Street, South Melbourne, and also lists a Brisbane office. Services are SEO, Google Ads, social advertising, content, web design, link building and digital PR, conversion rate optimisation and consulting. They are one of the few here to write plainly about money. Their site says there is no fixed cost for digital marketing, and that agencies typically charge $75 to $150 or more per hour, though they work on retainers instead.
Uprise Digital (yes, this is us)
We are in Cremorne, Melbourne, and work with businesses around Australia. Our focus is high intent lead generation: AI SEO and answer engine work, SEO, Google Ads, Meta and Instagram ads, ad creative, landing pages and conversion rate optimisation. Here is the honest part. On 12 September 2026 we did not appear in the first twenty Google results for this keyword, and ChatGPT did not name us. We build for narrower terms, a service and a city together, rather than the broad national keyword this post targets. We have included ourselves so you know who wrote the list, and put ourselves last because that is where today’s data puts us. We do not guarantee rankings, and neither should anyone else on this page.
Sydney based agencies
Direct Clicks
Direct Clicks is in Suite 4, Floor 9, 171 Clarence Street in the Sydney CBD. It was the only agency both visible in Google and named directly by ChatGPT, which is why it heads the table. Their site lists SEO, search engine marketing, web design and development, social media marketing, creative and lead generation strategy, and their Google listing shows more than twenty years in business. No prices are published.
Sparro
Sparro sits at Level 12, 35 Tumbalong Boulevard, Haymarket, and ranked first in the organic results for our main keyword. Their site describes them as Australia’s largest digital media agency by advertising spend, and part of Brainlabs, a global business of around 1,200 people that acquired them in 2024. Services are strategy, paid media across search, social, programmatic and video, SEO and earned media, with creative through a sister agency. They say they want to partner with businesses seeking scale. No prices are published, and the framing suggests this is not built for a first $2,000 a month budget.
Rocket Agency
Rocket has offices at Level 1, 137 Devonshire Street in Surry Hills and 3 Albert Coates Lane in Melbourne, and appeared in the organic results for both searches. Services are SEO, including generative AI SEO, search, display and YouTube ads, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok ads, website design, copywriting and email. Their site states they are a Google Premier Partner, a status they say only three per cent of Australian agencies hold, and the first Bing Select Partner in the country. No prices are published.
SOUP Agency
SOUP is at 4/60 Clarence Street in Sydney, with offices listed in Brisbane and Melbourne. It ranked first in the organic results for “best digital marketing agencies australia”, with its own list of top agencies. Services cover SEO, Google Ads, ads across Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn and Pinterest, email, copywriting, HubSpot setup and influencer work. They describe themselves as senior led. No prices are published.
Sydney Digital Marketing
This one is at 388 George Street in Sydney, with a second office at Kingscliff. It did not appear in our Google checks at all, but ChatGPT named it first and pointed at it three times, which shows how differently the two systems pick. Services are Google, Bing and YouTube ads, social ads, SEO and local SEO, email and CRM work, marketing automation, websites, branding and AI SEO. They publish a floor: engagements start from $6,000 per month, with strongest partnerships at $30,000 a month or more. Almost no agency shares that before a sales call.
netStripes
netStripes is at Level 3, 55 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Pyrmont. ChatGPT named it as a full service option, and it did not appear in our Google checks. Services are SEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads, social, web design and development and tech support. They aim squarely at Australian small and medium businesses, and they publish their pricing: a fixed fee growth diagnostic at $5,500 and monthly retainers from $3,000 to $10,000 across three tiers.
Local Digital
Local Digital has two offices, Level 4, 9 George Street in Parramatta and 76 Township Drive in Burleigh Heads, and appeared in the organic results for the broader search. Services are SEO in several forms, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, email, link building and digital PR. Their site says agencies generally range from $1,500 to $20,000 a month or more, and that spending under $1,000 a month is unlikely to move anything.
Queensland based agencies
Digital Nomads HQ
Digital Nomads HQ is at 208/45 Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba, on the Sunshine Coast, and ranked in the organic results for our main keyword, partly on the strength of its own agency listicle. Services are SEO, AI SEO, Google and Microsoft Ads, Performance Max, social ads, web design, branding, conversion rate optimisation, email, content and hosting. They publish indicative pricing: SEO retainers typically from $1,500 a month, Google Ads management from $1,000, and full service from $3,000, with costs varying by location and industry.
The Brisbane gap we did not expect
Here is the finding that surprised us. Across both Google searches and the ChatGPT answer, not one agency headquartered in Brisbane appeared. Sydney dominated, Melbourne took the map pack, one Sunshine Coast agency got through on its own blog, and Brisbane was invisible nationally.
That is not a statement about Brisbane agencies. Several good ones exist, and two agencies here, Digital Next and SOUP, run Brisbane offices. It is a statement about which keyword you search. National terms are won by whoever has the biggest link profile and the loudest blog. City terms surface the businesses actually working in that city.
So search the city, not the country. We keep separate lists for digital marketing agencies in Melbourne, digital marketing agencies in Sydney and digital marketing agencies in Brisbane, each built the same way as this one.
Full service or specialist
Almost every agency above calls itself full service. Read the service lists again and you can see how differently that word is used.
A genuine full service agency has separate people for search, paid social, creative and development, plus a strategist who decides how they fit together. Sparro and Rocket look like that from their own pages. The advantage is one contract and one contact. The cost is that you rarely get the best person in the country on any single channel, and the retainer covers a wide team.
A specialist does one or two things. SIXGUN leans heavily on search. The advantage is depth and usually a lower fee. The cost is that you manage two or three agencies yourself, and nobody owns the whole result.
The practical rule for a small Australian business is this. If one channel already works and you want more out of it, hire a specialist. If you do not know which channel should work and need someone to test and decide, hire full service, but ask who will do the work rather than who will attend the meetings. Our guide on how to choose a digital marketing agency in Australia without getting burned covers the contract traps.
What an Australian small business should expect to pay
Four agencies on this list publish real numbers. That is unusual and worth putting in one place.
| Agency | What they publish |
|---|---|
| Digital Nomads HQ | SEO retainers typically from $1,500 a month. Google Ads management from $1,000 a month. Full service from $3,000 a month. |
| netStripes | Fixed fee growth diagnostic at $5,500. Retainers from $3,000 to $10,000 a month across three tiers. |
| Sydney Digital Marketing | Engagements start from $6,000 a month. Strongest partnerships at $30,000 a month or more. |
| Local Digital | A general range of $1,500 to $20,000 a month or more, and a view that under $1,000 a month achieves little. |
| Digital Next | Agencies typically charge $75 to $150 or more per hour, though they work on retainers. |
Every other agency here publishes nothing. Their prices are probably in a similar band, but we have not seen them and will not guess. From those figures, here is a reasoning based range. It is our reasoning, not measured data, so treat it as a starting point for your own quotes.
- $1,000 to $2,000 a month. One channel, run lightly. This buys Google Ads management or a small local SEO retainer, not both. You are buying a few hours of attention a month.
- $2,500 to $5,000 a month. Where most small Australian service businesses land. One main channel done properly plus support work, such as SEO with landing pages, or Google Ads with conversion tracking sorted out.
- $5,000 to $10,000 a month. Two or three channels with a strategist involved, which matches the published retainer ceiling at netStripes and the published floor at Sydney Digital Marketing.
- $10,000 a month and up. Multi channel work with creative production. Below what the large agencies want, above what most small businesses need.
Two things people miss. The management fee is separate from what you spend with Google or Meta, so a $2,000 fee plus a $5,000 ad budget is a $7,000 month. And the fee usually excludes creative production, which often decides whether paid ads work at all.
Our search data pull also shows the average cost per click in Australia is $11.40 for “digital marketing agencies australia” and $58.67 for “seo agency australia”. That is what agencies pay to advertise to you, and those costs are built into their pricing. Your own industry’s clicks may be far cheaper. Our guide to Google Ads costs in Australia has the numbers by category.
When Australians actually shop for an agency
Our keyword pull on 12 September 2026 shows a clear pattern in when this term gets searched. Over the last twelve months, “digital marketing agencies australia” peaked at 3,600 searches in March 2026 and hit a second peak of 2,400 in September 2025. The low was 480 in July 2026. So the March peak was roughly seven times the winter low.
The same shape shows up in the city terms. Brisbane peaked in March at 1,600 and again in September 2025 at 3,600. Melbourne peaked in March at 2,400 and in September 2025 at 4,400. Two windows, one in late summer and one in early spring, with a quiet stretch through June and July. So good agencies have their fullest pipelines in March and September. You will get more attention approaching them outside the rush. We track Australian search demand seasonality across industries.
One more number. Searches for this term are down about 33 per cent year on year, and the same fall shows up across most related keywords we checked. We cannot prove why from search data alone, but the ChatGPT test in this post is one plausible part of it: people are asking AI tools for shortlists instead of typing a search. That is why we track AI search visibility alongside rankings.
Questions to ask before you sign
Ask these on the first call, before a proposal arrives. The answers tell you more than any case study page.
- Who does the work, and where do they sit? Ask for the name and role of the person touching your account each week. Some agencies sell with a senior and deliver with a junior or an offshore team. Neither is wrong. Not knowing is.
- What is the notice period, and what happens at the end? Twelve month lock ins still exist. Ask for month to month after an initial period, and get it in writing that you keep the Google Ads account, the analytics, the website and the content when you leave.
- What will you report, and how do I check it myself? You want leads and sales, not impressions. Ask for access to the raw accounts so you can verify any number in the report.
- What have you done in my industry, and can I call that client? A reference call is worth more than a case study page. If no client will take the call, note that.
- What does this cost in total? Get one figure for the fee, one for the media budget and one for creative production, and ask what happens if you need more creative.
- What happens in the first 90 days? A clear answer sounds like tracking fixed in week one, landing pages live by week four, first learnings by week eight. Three months of strategy and discovery is a warning.
- Will you show up in AI answers as well as Google? As our test showed, the agencies Google ranks and the agencies ChatGPT names barely overlap. Ask how they plan to handle both.
One more. If an agency guarantees you a position in Google, walk. Nobody controls Google’s results, and anyone promising a ranking either misunderstands how search works or hopes you do.
FAQ
Who is the best digital marketing agency in Australia?
There is no single best one, and any list claiming otherwise is selling something. What we can say is who was visible on 12 September 2026. Direct Clicks was the only agency in both our Google checks and the ChatGPT answer. Clearwater Agency held a map pack spot and an organic spot. Sparro ranked first in organic results nationally. Visibility is not fit, though. The best agency for you is the one whose people have solved your specific problem before, at a price you can sustain for at least six months.
How much does a digital marketing agency cost in Australia?
Based only on the agencies here that publish figures, single channel retainers start around $1,000 to $1,500 a month, mid sized retainers run $3,000 to $10,000, and one Sydney agency sets its floor at $6,000. One cites hourly rates of $75 to $150 or more as typical. Management fees sit on top of your ad spend, not inside it.
Why did no Brisbane agency appear in this list?
Because we searched a national keyword. National terms reward whoever has the strongest website and the biggest link profile, and on 12 September 2026 those sites were mostly in Sydney and Melbourne. Brisbane agencies rank for Brisbane terms, so search the city term and check our separate Brisbane list.
Is a full service agency better than a specialist?
Neither is better. Full service makes sense when several channels need coordinating and you do not want to manage multiple suppliers. A specialist makes sense when one channel already works and you want depth. The failure mode of full service is paying for a broad team you barely use. The failure mode of specialists is that nobody owns the overall result.
Why do Google and ChatGPT recommend such different agencies?
They read different things. Google leans on links, site authority and Google Business Profile signals. ChatGPT, in our test, leaned on published case studies with specific numbers in them, and cited agency case study pages directly as its sources. That is why Sydney Digital Marketing was named first by ChatGPT while not appearing in our Google top twenty at all. Checking both is worth the ten minutes.
Should I hire a local agency or does it not matter?
Technically it does not matter, since everything happens in accounts you can access from anywhere. It matters for two practical reasons. Local agencies tend to understand local demand and local competitors, which helps with local SEO and city targeted ads. And being in the same timezone, with the option of meeting face to face, makes a difference when something goes wrong. If you hire remotely, be firmer about the reporting and access questions above.
Where to go from here
Take three names off this list, then run the same two checks we did. Search your city term in Google and ask ChatGPT for a shortlist in your industry. If an agency cannot be found doing for itself what it sells, that is worth knowing before the first call.
If you want to talk through what search could look like for your business, our SEO services page explains how we work and what we do not promise. No pressure either way, and we are happy to point you at someone else on this list if they fit better.
