ChatGPT recommends businesses by assembling an answer from public sources: your Google Business Profile, your website, directories, review platforms, news coverage and forum discussion. There is no submission form, no advertising placement and no way to pay for inclusion. You get recommended by making those sources accurate, specific and consistent, so the system has enough confidence to name you rather than a competitor.

This guide covers how ChatGPT actually decides who to name, the seven signals that matter and the order to fix them in, how to test your own visibility tonight at no cost, and how long a change takes to show up.

Key takeaways

  • You cannot buy placement. Every lever is a public source you already control or can influence.
  • Your Google Business Profile carries more weight than your website for local recommendations.
  • Specific reviews beat plentiful reviews. “Great service” gives the system nothing to work with.
  • ChatGPT runs live web searches for many questions, so current sources matter as much as training data.
  • Fix profile and citation accuracy before you write a single blog post.

How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?

ChatGPT does not hold a verified register of Australian businesses. When someone asks for a recommendation, it draws on its training data and, for most local and commercial questions, a live web search performed at the moment of the request. It then reconciles what those sources say. Businesses described consistently and specifically across several trusted sources get named. Businesses described vaguely, inconsistently or not at all get skipped.

The practical consequence is that this is a corroboration problem rather than a ranking problem. You are not competing for a position. You are giving a system enough agreeing evidence to be confident recommending you by name.

Which signals actually decide it?

In rough order of weight for an Australian service business.

RankSignalWhy it carries weight
1Google Business Profile completenessThe densest, most structured source of business facts available
2Review specificity and recencyIndependent evidence naming the job type and location
3Citation consistency across directoriesContradictions lower confidence in every claim about you
4Website clarity on services and areasEstablishes what you do in retrievable language
5Third-party mentionsAssociation listings, media, forums, the part you cannot assert yourself
6Structured dataHelps a machine parse what is already visible on the page
7Crawler accessGates everything above it

Note that the top three sit off your website entirely. This is the most common misunderstanding we correct. Businesses commission content while the sources that actually drive recommendations sit incomplete.

How do you fix each one?

1. Complete your Google Business Profile properly

Fill every field. Primary and secondary categories, every service with its own description, service areas, hours, photos of real jobs, and the questions and answers section. Google’s Business Profile guidelines set out what complete looks like. A half-filled profile is the single most common reason a business is invisible in AI recommendations.

2. Build reviews that say something

Ask every satisfied customer, and prompt them to name the job and the suburb. Compare these two:

  • “Great service, highly recommend.”
  • “Replaced our switchboard in Joondalup two days after we called.”

The first tells a system nothing retrievable. The second tells it exactly which query you deserve to win. Volume matters less than specificity, and recency matters more than either.

3. Fix your citations

Search your business name and phone number. Correct every listing carrying an old address, a former trading name or a dead number. Prioritise your regulatory register, your industry association, the category directories relevant to your field and the major general directories. Each contradiction you remove raises confidence in the correct version.

4. Write service pages that state things plainly

A page that opens with “we deliver tailored solutions across a range of residential contexts” is not retrievable. A page that opens with “we install ducted air conditioning in homes across Brisbane’s northern suburbs” is. Lead with a direct statement of what you do, where, and for whom. Add cost ranges. Add an FAQ built from the questions you actually get on the phone.

5. Earn mentions you did not write

Association member listings, trade press commentary, local media, community sponsorship writeups and genuine forum recommendations. One independent mention carries weight your own site cannot, because it is corroboration rather than assertion.

6. Add structured data that reflects real content

Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQPage where the FAQ genuinely appears on the page. Markup that does not represent visible content breaches Google’s structured data guidelines. Our schema markup guide for AEO covers implementation.

7. Confirm ChatGPT can reach your site

OpenAI states that publishers wanting their content included in ChatGPT search results and snippets should allow OAI-SearchBot, per its publishers and developers FAQ. Plenty of Australian sites block it accidentally through robots.txt, a security plugin or a CDN setting.

How do you test whether ChatGPT recommends you?

Free, and you can do it tonight.

  1. Open ChatGPT in a fresh, logged-out session. A logged-in account with prior conversation about your business will name you, and that result is worthless.
  2. Ask the questions a customer would ask the week before they buy:
    • “Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?”
    • “I need a [your service] in [your suburb], who do you recommend?”
    • “How much does [your core job] cost in [your city]?”
    • “[Your business name] reviews”
  3. Record whether you were named, who was named instead, and which sources were cited.
  4. Repeat in Perplexity, which displays its citations openly and is therefore the fastest way to find the source feeding a competitor’s recommendation.
  5. Re-run monthly. Answers vary between sessions, so one clean result proves nothing.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead?

Four causes, in the order we usually find them.

They say it more plainly. Specific beats comprehensive. A competitor page naming the exact service and suburb outranks your page describing a broad capability.

Their reviews name the work. Reviews mentioning the job type and location map directly to the query being asked.

A third-party source is doing it for them. Often a directory, an association listing or a forum thread. Perplexity’s citations will show you which.

You are absent rather than beaten. In most first audits the problem is not that the system prefers a competitor. It is that it has nothing accurate to say about you and names whoever it can describe.

How long does it take to work?

Google Business Profile and citation corrections can influence ChatGPT within weeks, because it performs live web searches for most local and commercial questions and reads current sources. Review volume and independent mentions build over one to three months. Answers drawn primarily from training data change more slowly. Expect movement in the sequence of profile, then citations, then reputation signals.

Treat it as ongoing practice with monthly testing rather than a project with a completion date.

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT?

No. There is no advertising placement, no directory submission and no paid inclusion programme for business recommendations. Any vendor offering guaranteed placement in ChatGPT results is describing something that does not exist.

What you can legitimately pay for is the work: profile and citation correction, review generation from real customers, content, structured data and digital PR. Anyone offering fabricated reviews or commissioned forum posts is proposing conduct that breaches Australian Consumer Law, and the exposure sits with your business rather than theirs.

What we recommend

Run the test tonight before you spend anything. Most businesses discover the gap is not content quality. It is a Google Business Profile missing half its fields and four directories carrying an old phone number.

Then work in order. Profile, reviews, citations, service pages, mentions. Publishing content before the foundations are accurate is the most common way to spend a content budget and see nothing move.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google search results?

ChatGPT performs its own live web searches through its search integration rather than querying Google directly. The overlap in outcome is real, because both read the same public web. Strong Google visibility helps, and it does not guarantee an AI recommendation, since review specificity and citation consistency carry independent weight.

How do I submit my business to ChatGPT?

There is no submission process. ChatGPT assembles recommendations from public sources, so the equivalent action is making those sources complete and accurate, starting with your Google Business Profile and your directory listings.

Do I need a blog to get recommended by ChatGPT?

Not to begin with. A complete profile, specific reviews and consistent citations will move your visibility faster than content will. Content matters for the questions that sit above the recommendation, such as cost, comparison and process queries, and it earns its return once the foundations are accurate.

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time I ask?

Responses are generated at query time and vary between sessions, accounts and phrasings. This is why a single test tells you very little. Run a fixed prompt set monthly in fresh sessions and track the trend.

Does this help my Google rankings too?

Yes. A complete Google Business Profile, consistent citations, genuine reviews and clear service pages improve local search and Maps visibility at the same time. The work overlaps almost entirely with local SEO, which is why we run them as one engagement.

Which AI platforms should I care about beyond ChatGPT?

Google’s Gemini and AI Overviews, because they sit inside the search experience Australians already use, and Perplexity, because it displays citations and is therefore the best diagnostic tool. Optimising the shared sources improves all of them at once.

Want to know what ChatGPT says about your business?

We run AI visibility audits for Australian businesses: full prompt testing across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, source tracing for every competitor recommendation, and a prioritised fix list across your profile, citations and site.
