Paying for impressions, judged on sales? We plan Meta and Google campaigns for high-ticket services around cost per signed client, not cost per 1,000.

CPM is the cost of showing your ad 1,000 times. The M comes from mille, Latin for thousand, which is why you will also see it called cost per mille or cost per thousand.

It is the standard way to price reach on Meta, YouTube, display networks, connected TV and podcasts, and the quickest way to compare what two placements charge for attention.

What it doesn’t tell you is whether the right people saw the ad. A low CPM to the wrong audience is the most expensive kind of cheap.

    Formula
    Cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
    Also called
Cost per mille, cost per thousand
    Used on
    Meta, YouTube, display, CTV, podcasts
    Judge it with
CTR, cost per lead and cost per sale

The CPM Formula, With Worked Examples

There are three numbers in every CPM sum, and if you know any two you can find the third.

    CPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
    Total cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
    Impressions = total cost ÷ CPM × 1,000

Example 1: what did that campaign cost per 1,000?

    You spent $2,500 on a Meta campaign and it served 180,000 impressions. $2,500 ÷ 180,000 × 1,000 = $13.89 CPM.

Example 2: how much reach does a budget buy?

    A podcast quotes a $30 CPM and you have $1,500. $1,500 ÷ $30 × 1,000 = 50,000 impressions.

Example 3: what will a placement cost?

    A trade publication offers 40,000 newsletter impressions at a $45 CPM. $45 × 40,000 ÷ 1,000 = $1,800.

CPM vs CPC vs CPL vs Cost Per Sale

CPM is the first number in a chain. Each step down the chain gets closer to what the marketing is actually worth to you.

    MetricWhat you pay forFormulaBest for
CPM1,000 impressionsCost ÷ impressions × 1,000Comparing the price of reach
CPCA clickCost ÷ clicksSearch ads, traffic campaigns
    CPLAn enquiryCost ÷ leadsLead generation
Cost per saleA paying client(Ad cost + sales time) ÷ salesDeciding where the budget goes

They are linked: CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000). A $14 CPM with a 1% click-through rate works out at $1.40 a click. The same CPM with a 2% CTR halves it to $0.70. Our CTR calculator does that side of the sum.

What Pushes CPM Up or Down

Ad platforms sell impressions at auction, so CPM is a price set by demand for the audience you want. The main levers:

    • Audience. Small, specific or wealthy audiences cost more to reach than broad ones, because more advertisers want them.
    • Season. Auctions get crowded in the lead-up to Christmas and Black Friday, and in Australia around the end of the financial year, so CPMs rise for everyone.
    • Placement. Feeds, Stories, Reels, in-stream video and the audience network are priced differently, even inside one platform.
    • Creative. Platforms favour ads people engage with. An ad that gets ignored or hidden pays more to stay in the auction.
    • Objective. Asking Meta for conversions points your ads at people more likely to act, and they often cost more to reach than people who just scroll.
A higher CPM is often the better buy. For high-ticket services the audience that can afford you is small. Paying more per 1,000 to reach homeowners planning a $1 million build beats a cheap CPM to everyone in the city.

    CPM, eCPM and vCPM

    • CPM is what you pay per 1,000 impressions served.
    • eCPM (effective CPM) converts any pricing model into a CPM so you can compare them. If you paid per click, eCPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. Publishers use it the other way round, as revenue per 1,000 impressions.
    • vCPM (viewable CPM) only counts impressions that had a chance to be seen. Google Ads offers viewable CPM bidding, mainly on display campaigns, where you only pay for impressions where enough of the ad was on screen for long enough.

How to Use CPM Properly in a High-Ticket Business

For a law firm, builder or solar company, CPM is a cost input, not a result. We use it three ways:

    1. To price a test. If an audience costs $20 CPM and you want each person to see the ad about three times, $3,000 reaches roughly 50,000 people.
    2. To spot a problem early. A CPM that jumps while results drop usually means creative fatigue or a shrinking audience.
    3. To compare channels fairly. Turn every placement into a CPM, then follow each one down to cost per lead and cost per signed client.

That last step is where most reports stop short. One of our builder clients, KGN Homes, paid $19 a lead for guide downloads on Meta and $170 for consultation enquiries, and signed 3 contracts worth more than $5 million from $40,000 in ad spend (read the case study). No CPM figure would have told you that. Use our cost per sale calculator to finish the sum.

    CPM Questions, Answered

    How do you calculate CPM?

Divide your total ad cost by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. $2,500 for 180,000 impressions is a $13.89 CPM.

    What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille. Mille is Latin for thousand, so CPM is the cost of 1,000 ad impressions.

    What is a good CPM?

There is no single good CPM. It depends on the platform, placement, audience and time of year, and a higher CPM to the right buyers often wins. Judge CPM alongside click-through rate, cost per lead and cost per sale.

How do you convert CPM to CPC?

    CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000). A $15 CPM with a 1.5% click-through rate is $15 ÷ 15 = $1 a click.

Is CPM the same as cost per reach?

No. CPM counts impressions, and one person can see an ad several times. Cost per 1,000 people reached is always higher than CPM once frequency is above 1.

What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?

CPM is what you pay per 1,000 impressions. eCPM converts any pricing model, such as cost per click, into a cost per 1,000 impressions so you can compare campaigns that were bought differently.

Why did my CPM go up?

Common causes are a smaller or more competitive audience, busy seasons like Christmas and end of financial year, a change of objective or placement, and creative people have stopped engaging with.

Should I choose CPM or CPC bidding?

For most lead generation, optimise for the result you want, such as leads, and let the platform price impressions. CPM buying suits awareness campaigns where reach is the goal.
