Original research by Uprise Digital. Published 31 July 2026. Sample: 254 Australian service keywords across 5 industries and 12 cities.
Most articles about Google Ads costs in Australia quote American numbers. We wanted real Australian ones, so we pulled live Google Ads cost-per-click data for 300 service keywords across 12 Australian cities and five industries, then worked out what businesses in each trade actually pay for a click.
The short answer: the median Australian service keyword costs $16.19 per click. But that median hides a huge spread. A skin clinic pays as little as $1.18. A personal injury law firm in Geelong pays $102.72. For the same one click.
Key findings
- Trades are the most expensive industry in Australia at a median $22.68 per click, ahead of legal ($18.13), solar ($17.40) and property ($14.37).
- Medical is the cheapest at a median $3.96 per click, roughly one sixth the cost of trades.
- The most expensive keyword we found was “personal injury lawyer geelong” at $102.72 per click. Four of the five priciest keywords in the study were personal injury law.
- “Emergency plumber sydney” costs $87.19 per click, making emergency plumbing the second most expensive service category in Australia at a median $49.54.
- Newcastle is the most expensive city in Australia for service ads at a median $22.03 per click, higher than Sydney ($19.40) and Melbourne ($19.44).
- Hobart is the cheapest major city at $7.26 per click, about one third of Newcastle.
- The highest top-of-page bid recorded in the study was $136.03, in the legal category.
- 64.3% of the keywords studied carry commercial intent, meaning most Australian service searches are people comparing providers, not people researching a topic.
Method
We built a list of 300 keywords by combining five service industries, five common search terms in each, and twelve Australian cities.
The industries were solar, legal, trades, medical and property. The cities were Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Hobart, Darwin, Geelong and Wollongong.
We pulled cost-per-click, search volume, competition and top-of-page bid data for those keywords from Google Ads via the DataForSEO API on 31 July 2026, set to location Australia and language English. Of the 300 keywords, 291 returned data and 254 returned a cost-per-click figure. Keywords with no cost data are excluded from all cost calculations.
All figures are in Australian dollars. We report medians rather than averages because a handful of very expensive legal keywords would otherwise drag the averages up and make them misleading. Where we quote an average, we say so.
One thing to understand about this data: cost-per-click from Google Ads is an estimate of what advertisers are currently paying. It moves. Treat these as benchmarks for planning, not as quotes.
Cost per click by industry
Trades came out as the most expensive industry in Australia, which surprised us. The common assumption is that legal is always the priciest category. In Australia, across a broad set of city keywords, trades beat it.
| Industry | Keywords | Median CPC | Average CPC | Highest CPC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trades | 60 | $22.68 | $25.19 | $87.19 |
| Legal | 60 | $18.13 | $24.49 | $102.72 |
| Solar | 48 | $17.40 | $18.16 | $47.01 |
| Property | 59 | $14.37 | $15.83 | $30.73 |
| Medical | 27 | $3.96 | $4.97 | $14.75 |
Legal has the higher average ($24.49) and the higher ceiling ($102.72), but the lower median. That tells you legal is a category of extremes. Personal injury and criminal work cost a fortune. Immigration law sits at a median $10.36, cheaper than most trades.
Medical looks cheap, and in click terms it is. But medical also had the fewest keywords returning cost data in our sample, so read that row with more caution than the others.
Cost per click by service
Breaking it down by the actual service is more useful than the industry average, because that is the level at which a business actually buys ads.
| Service | Median CPC | Cheapest city | Most expensive city |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury lawyer | $53.23 | $12.57 | $102.72 |
| Emergency plumber | $49.54 | $7.15 | $87.19 |
| Plumber | $31.74 | $8.17 | $46.41 |
| Electrician | $22.69 | $8.77 | $31.95 |
| Solar installer | $20.76 | $15.11 | $25.31 |
| Mortgage broker | $20.40 | $14.02 | $27.03 |
| Criminal lawyer | $19.95 | $6.42 | $47.56 |
| Air conditioning installation | $19.86 | $7.37 | $28.94 |
| Solar quotes | $19.76 | $11.12 | $47.01 |
| Buyers agent | $18.54 | $3.05 | $30.70 |
| Conveyancing | $18.11 | $5.46 | $30.73 |
| Family lawyer | $17.82 | $6.31 | $37.77 |
| Solar panels | $15.50 | $3.24 | $22.99 |
| Solar battery | $15.07 | $6.49 | $26.65 |
| Property manager | $14.09 | $7.89 | $19.44 |
| Immigration lawyer | $10.36 | $5.26 | $18.88 |
| Dentist | $9.33 | $3.89 | $14.75 |
| Builder | $9.12 | $4.08 | $15.42 |
| Real estate agent | $8.77 | $7.41 | $12.20 |
| Cosmetic surgery | $4.32 | $1.36 | $7.27 |
| Skin clinic | $2.87 | $1.18 | $4.09 |
The gap between the cheapest and most expensive city for the same service is the thing worth staring at. “Emergency plumber” ranges from $7.15 to $87.19. That is a twelve times difference for the same words, based only on where the customer is.
If you run a service business in a smaller city, this is good news. Your competitors in Sydney are paying several times what you pay for the same job.
Cost per click by city
We expected Sydney and Melbourne to top the list. They did not.
| City | Keywords | Median CPC |
|---|---|---|
| Newcastle | 22 | $22.03 |
| Gold Coast | 22 | $21.83 |
| Perth | 23 | $20.76 |
| Brisbane | 21 | $20.24 |
| Melbourne | 21 | $19.44 |
| Sydney | 21 | $19.40 |
| Wollongong | 18 | $18.34 |
| Geelong | 20 | $14.37 |
| Adelaide | 23 | $14.12 |
| Canberra | 22 | $13.60 |
| Darwin | 21 | $8.81 |
| Hobart | 20 | $7.26 |
Newcastle, the Gold Coast and Perth all cost more per click than Sydney. The reason is competition density relative to search volume. Sydney has far more searches, so there is more room. Newcastle has fewer searches and a similar number of hungry advertisers fighting over them.
The full picture: industry by city
| City | Legal | Trades | Solar | Property | Medical |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | $28.08 | $21.35 | $19.36 | $17.38 | $3.96 |
| Melbourne | $23.41 | $20.06 | $15.41 | $21.62 | $2.66 |
| Brisbane | $29.35 | $21.35 | $17.63 | $20.24 | $2.90 |
| Perth | $19.62 | $24.50 | $20.76 | $27.03 | $4.32 |
| Adelaide | $13.41 | $25.45 | $16.24 | $14.12 | $2.11 |
| Gold Coast | $30.73 | $26.57 | $20.35 | $20.52 | $4.62 |
| Canberra | $11.24 | $28.85 | $15.58 | $12.47 | $2.84 |
| Newcastle | $22.08 | $28.94 | $25.24 | $13.30 | $4.43 |
| Hobart | $6.81 | $7.37 | $11.81 | $7.43 | $4.58 |
| Darwin | $6.74 | $8.81 | $7.13 | $12.33 | $1.95 |
| Geelong | $15.79 | $17.94 | $12.91 | $14.02 | $9.42 |
| Wollongong | $19.85 | $31.95 | $16.77 | $12.72 | $5.27 |
A few patterns stand out.
Legal is most expensive on the Gold Coast ($30.73) and in Brisbane ($29.35), not Sydney. Queensland has a dense personal injury advertising market.
Trades peak in Wollongong ($31.95), Canberra ($28.85) and Newcastle ($28.94). These are the places where a plumber pays the most in the country to be seen.
Hobart and Darwin are cheap across every single industry. If you operate in either city, your cost of customer acquisition through Google Ads is structurally lower than it is for a competitor on the mainland east coast.
What this means for your budget
Cost per click only matters when you turn it into cost per enquiry. Here is what these numbers look like if you assume a 3% landing page conversion rate, which is a common benchmark for service businesses.
| Industry | Median CPC | Cost of 100 clicks | Modelled cost per enquiry at 3% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trades | $22.68 | $2,268 | $756 |
| Legal | $18.13 | $1,813 | $604 |
| Solar | $17.40 | $1,740 | $580 |
| Property | $14.37 | $1,437 | $479 |
| Medical | $3.96 | $396 | $132 |
Be clear about what that last column is. It is a model, not a measurement. We did not measure conversion rates in this study. We are showing you the arithmetic so you can put your own conversion rate in and get a number that fits your business.
The practical point stands either way. If you are a plumber and your landing page converts at 1% instead of 3%, your cost per enquiry is not $756. It is $2,268. At these click prices, the landing page matters more than the ad account.
How hard is it to rank instead?
Since paid clicks cost this much, the obvious question is what it takes to rank organically for the same terms. We pulled keyword difficulty and the average number of referring domains pointing at the pages currently ranking.
| Industry | Median keyword difficulty | Median referring domains of ranking pages |
|---|---|---|
| Property | 5 | 22.7 |
| Legal | 12 | 29.9 |
| Solar | 13 | 31.9 |
| Trades | 15 | 32.3 |
| Medical | 19 | 22.7 |
These difficulty scores are low. A median of 5 to 19 out of 100 means most Australian city service keywords are winnable without a huge link budget. The pages ranking today have a median of 22 to 32 referring domains, which is achievable for a real local business over a year.
Put that next to the click prices and the trade-off is stark. A trades business paying $22.68 a click is spending roughly $2,268 for 100 visits. The same money spent once on content and links could earn a page that brings visits every month at a difficulty score of 15.
Search intent in Australian service searches
We also classified the search intent behind each keyword.
- Commercial: 64.3%
- Navigational: 24.1%
- Informational: 8.6%
- Transactional: 3.1%
Nearly two thirds of these searches are commercial, meaning the person is comparing options and choosing a provider. Only 8.6% are informational.
This matters for how you build pages. A blog post explaining how solar panels work is chasing the smallest slice of this market. A page that helps someone choose between installers is chasing the biggest one.
Limitations
We would rather tell you where this data is weak than have you over-read it.
- Cost-per-click figures are Google Ads estimates of current advertiser costs. Real accounts vary based on quality score, ad rank, match type and time of year.
- The medical category returned cost data for only 27 keywords, fewer than the other four. Treat medical figures as directional.
- Nine of the 300 keywords returned no data at all and are excluded.
- We sampled five services per industry. A different five would shift the industry medians.
- Cost per enquiry figures are modelled from an assumed 3% conversion rate. They are illustrative arithmetic, not measurements.
- This is a point-in-time snapshot from 31 July 2026. Australian search costs move with the seasons and with the economy.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Ads cost in Australia?
Across 254 Australian service keywords, the median cost per click is $16.19. By industry, the median is $22.68 for trades, $18.13 for legal, $17.40 for solar, $14.37 for property and $3.96 for medical.
What is the most expensive Google Ads keyword in Australia?
In this study, “personal injury lawyer geelong” was the most expensive at $102.72 per click. The highest top-of-page bid recorded anywhere in the sample was $136.03, also in the legal category.
Which Australian city has the most expensive Google Ads?
Newcastle, at a median $22.03 per click across all five industries. It is more expensive than Sydney ($19.40) and Melbourne ($19.44). Hobart is the cheapest at $7.26.
Why is Newcastle more expensive than Sydney for Google Ads?
Because cost per click is set by competition relative to available searches. Sydney has far more search volume to spread advertisers across. Smaller cities like Newcastle have fewer searches but a similar density of advertisers competing for them, which pushes the price up.
How much should a tradie budget for Google Ads in Australia?
At a median $22.68 per click, 100 clicks costs about $2,268. If your landing page converts at 3%, that is roughly $756 per enquiry. If it converts at 1%, the same spend produces one enquiry instead of three. Work out your own conversion rate before setting a budget.
Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads for Australian service businesses?
The keywords in this study have a median difficulty of 5 to 19 out of 100, and the pages ranking for them have a median of 22 to 32 referring domains. That is a low bar compared to the ongoing cost of clicks at $14 to $23 each. For most Australian service businesses, organic is cheaper over a two-year horizon, though it is slower to start.
