## What is CTR?

[Use the CTR Calculator](#ut-top)

Click-through rate is the share of people who saw something and clicked it. 1,260 clicks from 42,000 impressions is a 3% CTR.

It is the clearest signal of whether an ad, a search result or an email subject is relevant to the person seeing it. Google Ads and Meta both reward relevant ads, so CTR also feeds into what you pay for each click.

## The CTR Formula, With Examples

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100
Clicks = impressions × CTR
Impressions = clicks ÷ CTR

### Google Ads

A search campaign shows 42,000 times and gets 1,260 clicks. 1,260 ÷ 42,000 × 100 = **3% CTR**.

### Google Search Console

Search Console reports organic CTR the same way: clicks from Google search results divided by impressions in them. A page with 8,000 impressions and 240 clicks has a 3% organic CTR.

### Planning ahead

You need 600 clicks a month and your ads average a 2.5% CTR. 600 ÷ 0.025 = **24,000 impressions** needed.

## Email CTR vs Click-to-Open Rate

Email has two click rates, and mixing them up is the most common reporting mistake we see.

| Metric | Formula | What it measures |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Click-through rate | Unique clicks ÷ emails delivered | How well the whole send performed |
| Click-to-open rate | Unique clicks ÷ unique opens | How well the content worked for people who opened it |
| Open rate | Unique opens ÷ emails delivered | Subject line and sender, with caveats |

Since Apple introduced Mail Privacy Protection in 2021, Apple Mail can load emails in the background, which records opens that never happened. Open rate and click-to-open rate are less reliable as a result. Click-through rate on delivered emails is the safer number to compare sends.

## Why CTR Matters Beyond Clicks

- **It lowers what you pay.** Google uses expected click-through rate as part of Quality Score and Ad Rank. Ads people click more tend to win better positions for less.
- **It shows relevance.** A low CTR usually means the ad or result doesn’t match what the person was looking for.
- **It is an early warning.** CTR falling while impressions hold steady is a classic sign of ad fatigue on Meta.

**Don’t chase CTR for its own sake.** Curiosity headlines can double clicks and halve enquiries. For high-ticket services, an ad that says the price range and who it’s for may get a lower CTR and far better leads.

## How to Improve CTR

### Paid search

- Put the searcher’s words in the headline. Someone searching for a family lawyer in Parramatta should see those words.
- Use every relevant asset: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call and location assets. They make the ad bigger and more useful.
- Split broad ad groups so each one matches one service and one intent.

### Meta and social ads

- Lead with a real project, a real person or a real number in the first second of the creative.
- Refresh creative before fatigue sets in. Watch frequency and CTR together.
- Offer something worth clicking for, like a cost guide, rather than a generic “enquire now”.

### Organic search

- Write titles that answer the query and say what is on the page.
- Add specifics people scan for, such as prices, locations, years and numbers.
- Use structured data where it is eligible, so your result can show more detail. Our [schema markup generator](https://uprisedigital.com.au/tools/schema-markup-generator/) writes the code.

A click is only worth what happens next. Follow it through to leads with our [CPM calculator](https://uprisedigital.com.au/tools/cpm-calculator/)

## CTR Questions, Answered

How do you calculate CTR?

Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. 1,260 clicks from 42,000 impressions is a 3% CTR.

What is a good CTR?

It depends heavily on the channel, the industry and the position of the ad or result. Search ads usually earn far higher CTRs than display or social ads. Compare against your own past results and judge CTR together with conversion rate.

What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?

CTR measures clicks as a share of impressions. Conversion rate measures leads or sales as a share of clicks. A good campaign needs both.

How is email CTR calculated?

Unique clicks divided by emails delivered, times 100. Click-to-open rate divides unique clicks by unique opens instead.

Why is my CTR in Search Console so low?

Search Console counts every impression, including results on page two and queries where you appear for a loosely related term. Low positions pull the average down. Look at CTR for your top queries and pages.

Does CTR affect Google Ads costs?

Yes. Expected click-through rate is one of the components of Quality Score, and better quality ads can achieve better positions at lower cost.

Can CTR be over 100%?

Not with unique clicks. If a report shows more clicks than impressions, it is counting total clicks, including repeat clicks from the same person.

How do I calculate impressions from CTR?

Divide clicks by CTR as a decimal. 600 clicks at a 2.5% CTR needs 600 ÷ 0.025 = 24,000 impressions.
