Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft’s free dashboard for seeing how Bing crawls, indexes and shows your website, and since February 2026 it also shows when Microsoft Copilot cites your pages. If you already use Google Search Console, you can set it up in about 20 minutes by importing your site, then add IndexNow so Bing hears about new pages straight away.

What it will not do is get you into ChatGPT. Many agencies say “ChatGPT uses Bing, so rank on Bing.” On 24 September 2026 we tested that across 24 Australian buying questions, and only 16% of the sites ChatGPT cited were in Bing’s top 20 for the same search. Below is the setup, step by step, then the data.

**Key findings**

- Only 16% of the domains ChatGPT cited were in Bing’s top 20 for the matching search, 20% were in Google’s top 20, and 70% were in neither (108 citations, 24 questions, 24 September 2026).
- Claude’s citations overlapped most with search rankings: 45% were in Bing’s top 20 and 58% in Google’s.
- Google and Bing’s top 20 results shared 38% of their domains on average, so ranking on one does not mean ranking on the other.
- Of 531 Australian business homepages we fetched, 11.1% showed a Bing verification tag or file, against 39.5% showing a Google verification tag.
- 90.9% of 516 robots.txt files declared a sitemap, none blocked Bingbot, and 2.9% blocked at least one AI crawler.

## What is Bing Webmaster Tools, and is it worth it?

Bing Webmaster Tools (often just called Bing Webmaster) is to Bing what Search Console is to Google. It tells you which of your pages Bing has indexed, which searches you appear for, which sites link to you, and what is stopping Bing from crawling your pages properly.

It is worth 20 minutes of your time for four reasons:

- **Bing’s results travel further than Bing.**[DuckDuckGo says](https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/sources) it sources its traditional links “largely” from Bing, and Microsoft says Copilot relies on the same crawling and indexing foundation as Bing search.
- **It shows Copilot citations.** The AI Performance report shows how often Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite your pages.
- **IndexNow.** One setting tells Bing, and several other search engines, the moment a page changes.
- **Free diagnostics.** URL inspection, SEO reports, backlink data and keyword research, all at no cost.

For most Australian businesses, Google still brings far more traffic than Bing, so treat this as a sensible extra rather than a priority over your core [SEO work on Google](/seo/)
.

## How to set up Bing Webmaster Tools in 20 minutes

Every step below follows Microsoft’s own help pages, which we checked on 24 September 2026.

### Step 1: Sign in

Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in. Microsoft’s getting started checklist says you can use an existing Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, or create a new Microsoft account.

### Step 2: Add your site, the fast way or the manual way

**The fast way: import from Google Search Console.** If your site is already verified in Search Console, choose the import option and give Bing permission to read your account. Bing lists your verified sites and their sitemaps, you tick the ones you want, and they are added and verified automatically. You can import up to 100 sites at once.

**The manual way: add your URL and prove you own it.** Microsoft’s [add and verify site guide](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/add-and-verify-site-12184f8b)
 lists four methods:

1. **DNS auto verification**, if your domain provider supports the Domain Connect standard. You log in to your DNS provider when prompted and the record is added for you.
2. **XML file:** download a file called BingSiteAuth.xml and upload it to the root of your site.
3. **Meta tag:** paste a tag named msvalidate.01 into the head section of your homepage.
4. **CNAME record:** add a DNS record with the code Bing gives you.

On WordPress, the meta tag is usually easiest: most SEO plugins have a field for the Bing code. Leave the tag in place after verifying rather than deleting it once the green tick appears. Microsoft says it usually takes about 48 hours for data to appear.

### Step 3: Submit your sitemap

Open Sitemaps and submit your sitemap URL, usually yoursite.com.au/sitemap.xml or sitemap_index.xml on WordPress. Bing accepts XML sitemaps, RSS, Atom and plain text files with one URL per line. Bing will also find your sitemap if your robots.txt contains a line like “Sitemap: https://yoursite.com.au/sitemap.xml”, which 90.9% of the sites in our sample already had.

### Step 4: Turn on IndexNow

This is the step most people skip, and the one Microsoft pushes hardest. See the next section.

### Step 5: Check back in a week

Once data arrives, open URL Inspection for your homepage and one important service page. It shows whether each page is indexed, any crawl errors, and SEO issues, and the Live URL tab shows what Bingbot sees when it downloads the page.

Most of the setup is a one-off job you can do from any laptop.

## IndexNow: how to submit your site to Bing the fast way

IndexNow is a simple way to tell search engines that a page was added, changed or deleted, instead of waiting for them to crawl it. Microsoft now calls it the “strongly recommended” way to submit URLs, and says its older URL Submission tools “may be deprecated in the future as IndexNow adoption expands.”

Here is how it works, from the official [IndexNow documentation](https://www.indexnow.org/documentation)
:

- You create a key: a string of 8 to 128 letters, numbers and dashes.
- You host a text file named after the key (for example yourkey.txt) at the root of your site, containing only the key.
- Each time a page changes, your site sends its URL and the key to an IndexNow endpoint. You can send up to 10,000 URLs in one request.
- The search engine that receives it shares it with every other participating engine.

As at 24 September 2026, the official list of participants was Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, Amazon and the Internet Archive. Google is not on it, so IndexNow does nothing for your Google rankings.

You rarely need to do this by hand. IndexNow lists WordPress, Shopify, Wix, GoDaddy, Duda, Joomla and Drupal among the platforms that support it natively or through SEO plugins, and Cloudflare offers it as a setting. On WordPress, check whether your SEO plugin has an IndexNow toggle, or install the IndexNow plugin published by Bing Webmaster Tools. Once it is running, the IndexNow section in Bing Webmaster Tools shows the URLs you have sent.

We tried to measure how many Australian sites use IndexNow, but could not do it reliably. The key file is named after a private key, so there is no standard address to check, and plugins and Cloudflare send notifications without leaving a visible trace on the page. So we left it out rather than guess.

## The Bing Webmaster reports worth checking

You do not need to live in the dashboard. These are the parts worth a monthly look:

- **Search Performance:** clicks, impressions and average position on Bing, by query and by page.
- **URL Inspection:** index status, crawl details, SEO issues and structured data for any page.
- **SEO reports and recommendations:** Microsoft says these run automatically on verified sites every second week.
- **Backlinks:** the sites Bing sees linking to you, a free second opinion next to Google’s link report.
- **Keyword research:** Bing search demand for terms you care about.
- **AI Performance:** citations in Copilot and Bing’s AI answers, covered next.

## What the AI Performance report shows, and what it does not

Microsoft launched AI Performance as a public preview on 10 February 2026. According to the [Bing Webmaster blog announcement](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview)
, it shows how your content appears across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and “select partner integrations.” It reports:

- **Total citations:** how many times your pages were shown as a source in AI answers.
- **Average cited pages:** how many different pages of yours were cited per day.
- **Grounding queries:** the short search phrases the AI used when it fetched your content. These are not the user’s actual question.
- **Page-level citations:** which URLs are cited most.

In June 2026 Microsoft added four preview features: Intents (whether citations came from commercial, local, research or other types of query), Topics (grouping related queries), Citation Share (your share of all citations shown for a grounding query) and Compare (changes over time). Data covers 7 days, 30 days or 3 months, and you can export it.

Two cautions. Microsoft says the data is a sample, not a full log, and that very low citation activity may not appear at all, so a small business may see little or nothing. And Microsoft does not name ChatGPT among the “partner” experiences, so do not treat this report as a ChatGPT tracker. For the assistants it does not cover, see our guide on [how to track AI visibility](/blog/how-to-track-ai-visibility/)
.

## Does ChatGPT use Bing? What our data says

Partly, and less than you have been told. OpenAI’s [ChatGPT search help article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)
says ChatGPT “sometimes partners with other search providers,” rewrites your question into shorter search queries, and sends them to those providers. It then points to Microsoft’s privacy statement, so Bing is one of those providers. Bing is one input, not the only one, and our data suggests it does not decide which businesses ChatGPT names.

We tested this directly. On 24 September 2026 we ran 24 Australian buying questions, such as “Who are the best family lawyers in Melbourne? Give me a shortlist with reasons,” through five AI assistants. We then looked up the matching keyword (such as “family lawyers melbourne”) in Google’s top 20 and Bing’s top 20 for Australia, and checked whether each domain the assistant cited appeared in either.

| AI assistant | Citations checked | In Bing top 20 | In Google top 20 | In neither |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | 108 | 16% | 20% | 70% |
| Gemini | 147 | 36% | 47% | 42% |
| Perplexity | 362 | 30% | 35% | 52% |
| Claude | 138 | 45% | 58% | 28% |
| Google AI Mode | 40 | 35% | 43% | 55% |

Source: Uprise Digital research, 24 September 2026. 24 Australian buying questions, one run each. A citation counts if its domain appears anywhere in the top 20 for the matching keyword. Shares can add to more than 100% because a domain can rank on both engines.

Share of each assistant’s cited domains that also appeared in Google’s or Bing’s top 20 for the matching search. Source: Uprise Digital research, 24 September 2026, n = 795 citations across 24 questions.

Three things stand out.

**ChatGPT had the weakest link to either search engine.** Seven in ten of its citations were not in Bing’s or Google’s top 20 at all. Its background searches often went straight to specific sources, such as Doyle’s Guide for lawyers, the QBCC licence register for Brisbane trades, or SolarQuotes installer reviews for Perth solar, rather than taking whatever ranked first.

**Every assistant matched Google more than Bing,** including ChatGPT. That is not proof that any of them use Google. It is a sign that both search engines tend to rank the same strong sites, and that Google’s results are a slightly closer match to what assistants trust.

**Bing and Google disagree a lot.** On average the two top 20 lists shared 38% of their domains, and for one question (“seo consultant sydney”) they shared none. So a page that ranks well on Google may not rank on Bing, and the other way round.

The practical point: if your goal is to be named by ChatGPT, ranking on Bing is not the lever. The sources ChatGPT cites (directories, registers, review sites and your own clear service pages) matter more. Our guide on [how to get recommended by ChatGPT](/blog/how-to-get-recommended-by-chatgpt/)
covers those, and our comparison of [ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity](/blog/chatgpt-vs-gemini-vs-perplexity/)

## How many Australian businesses have set up Bing Webmaster Tools?

To see how common the setup is, we took every business website that appeared in our study, either in Google’s top 20 or cited by an AI assistant. That gave 550 distinct Australian business domains across law, building, marketing agencies and trades. On 24 September 2026 we fetched each homepage, its robots.txt file and its /BingSiteAuth.xml file. 531 homepages loaded properly and 516 robots.txt files were readable.

What 531 Australian business websites show about Bing and Google setupHorizontal bar chart: 90.9 percent of robots.txt files declare a sitemap, 39.5 percent of homepages show a Google verification tag, 11.1 percent show a Bing verification tag or file, 2.9 percent of robots.txt files block an AI crawler, and none block Bingbot.Australian business websites, 24 September 2026robots.txt declares a sitemap90.9%Google verification tag39.5%Bing verification tag or file11.1%robots.txt blocks an AI crawler2.9%robots.txt blocks Bingbot0%0%25%50%75%

Verification shares are out of 531 homepages that loaded; robots.txt shares are out of 516 readable files. Verification figures are a lower bound, because DNS verification and Search Console import leave no trace on the page. Source: Uprise Digital research, 24 September 2026, n = 550 domains.

The results, with the limits spelled out:

- **Bing verification: 11.1% (59 of 531).** 43 homepages had the msvalidate.01 meta tag and 18 had a working BingSiteAuth.xml file (some had both).
- **Google verification tag: 39.5% (210 of 531).** We could only check the meta tag for Google, because Google’s file method uses a random file name. Even with one less method counted, Google was more than three times as common.
- **By industry:** Bing verification ranged from 8.4% of law firm sites (10 of 119) to 14.9% of trades and services sites (20 of 134).
- **Sitemaps:** 90.9% of robots.txt files (469 of 516) declared a sitemap, mostly added automatically by SEO plugins.
- **Blocking:** no robots.txt file blocked Bingbot. Only 15 (2.9%) blocked any AI crawler, most often Bytespider (9) and CCBot (7). Five blocked GPTBot, and none blocked OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.

These are visible signs only. A business can verify Bing through DNS or a Search Console import and leave no trace, so the true share is higher than 11.1%. Even so, the gap suggests most Australian businesses in competitive local searches have not set up Bing Webmaster Tools, which makes it a cheap check that your competitors have probably skipped.

## Bing SEO: what actually helps

Microsoft’s [Bing Webmaster Guidelines](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/webmasters-guidelines-30fba23a)
now cover Copilot and AI answers as well as search. The parts that matter most for an Australian service business:

1. **Do not block Bingbot** in robots.txt, and do not hide important content behind scripts Bing can not render.
2. **Keep your sitemap clean:** canonical URLs only, deleted pages removed, and accurate lastmod dates.
3. **Use IndexNow** when pages are added, changed or removed.
4. **Watch your meta directives.** Microsoft says NOARCHIVE stops content being used in Copilot answers, and NOCACHE limits Copilot to your title, URL and snippet. If a plugin added these, you may be hiding from Copilot without knowing.
5. **Put key facts early** and state them plainly on the page, with clear headings, one topic per URL and consistent business names.
6. **Claim Bing Places for Business** if you serve local customers. Microsoft links it to accurate business details in AI answers, in the same way [Google Business Profile optimisation](/blog/google-business-profile-optimisation/) feeds Google.

None of this is different from good Google SEO. If you want a structured way to check the AI side, our [AI SEO audit checklist](/blog/ai-seo-audit/)
and our explainer on [what GEO is](/blog/what-is-geo/)
 cover it.

## How we did this research

All data was collected on 24 September 2026.

- **AI citations vs rankings:** 24 Australian buying questions (6 law, 6 builders, 6 marketing agencies and SEO, 6 trades and services), each run once through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude (the API versions with web search on, not the consumer apps) and Google AI Mode. For each question we collected Google’s top 20 organic results (desktop, Australia) and Bing’s top 20 (bing.com, Australian market, read in a browser). A citation counted as “in the top 20” if its domain appeared anywhere in that list.
- **Website check:** 550 distinct business domains from the same study, taken from Google’s top 20 and from AI citations classified as business websites. We fetched each homepage with a normal browser user agent, looked for the msvalidate.01 and google-site-verification meta tags, requested /BingSiteAuth.xml and /robots.txt, and parsed each robots.txt for Sitemap lines and full-site Disallow rules for Bingbot and 16 AI crawlers. Sites showing a bot challenge or error page were excluded from the homepage figures (19 of 550).

Limits: one run per question, and AI answers vary between runs, so treat the overlap figures as a snapshot. Verification tags are a lower bound. Our robots.txt check only counts a full block of the whole site, not partial rules. We did not measure IndexNow use because it can not be detected reliably from outside.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Bing Webmaster Tools free?

Yes. It is free to sign up with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, and every report, including AI Performance, costs nothing. You only need to prove you own the website, which takes a few minutes with a Search Console import or a meta tag.

### How do I submit my site to Bing?

Add your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, verify it, and submit your XML sitemap under Sitemaps. Then set up IndexNow, through your SEO plugin, your platform or Cloudflare, so Bing is told about new and updated pages automatically. Bing can also find your sitemap through a Sitemap line in robots.txt.

### Does ChatGPT use Bing?

Partly. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends queries to third-party search providers and names Microsoft among them. But in our 24 September 2026 test, only 16% of the domains ChatGPT cited were in Bing’s top 20 for the same search, and 70% were in neither Bing’s nor Google’s top 20.

### What is IndexNow, and does Google use it?

IndexNow is a free protocol that lets your website tell search engines the moment a page is added, changed or deleted. Participating engines include Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep and Amazon, and they share submissions with each other. Google is not a participant, so it does not affect your Google rankings.

### Can I import my site from Google Search Console?

Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools can import up to 100 verified sites at a time from Search Console, verify them automatically and bring your sitemaps across. It keeps checking the connection and imports new sitemaps you add later, and you can disconnect it at any time from your profile.

### Does Bing Webmaster Tools show ChatGPT traffic?

No. The AI Performance report covers Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and unnamed partner integrations, and Microsoft does not list ChatGPT among them. To see ChatGPT visibility you need to test prompts yourself or use a separate tracking tool, and check referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics.

Bing Webmaster Tools is a good 20-minute job, but it sits on top of the work that actually moves rankings and AI recommendations.
