Most “best web design agency” lists are written once and then left alone. This one was built on 12 September 2026 from two checks we ran that day: a live Google search in Australia for **best web design agencies australia** and **web design agency australia**, and a ChatGPT test using the question a real buyer would ask.

The two checks barely agreed. ChatGPT named fifteen businesses. Google returned twenty results across the two searches. Only one company showed up in both: Spark Interact. Worth knowing before you shortlist, because the list you get depends entirely on where you look.

Below are twelve agencies, what each builds on, whether they publish a price, and where we saw them. Our top pick is Uprise Digital, our own agency, because we build sites for service businesses that need a steady flow of enquiries, and we explain why below. The other eleven follow in order of how visible they were on the day.

## How we built this list

Three steps, all done on 12 September 2026.

1. **Live Google search.** Two organic searches set to Australia, in English, to a depth of twenty results: “best web design agencies australia” and “web design agency australia”. We noted every agency that appeared, map results included.
2. **ChatGPT test.** We asked ChatGPT, with web search on and location set to Australia, “best web design agency in Australia for a small business”, and recorded every business it named.
3. **Homepage check.** We then read the website of each agency we planned to list, to confirm the city, the platforms and whether they publish pricing.

Our top pick is Uprise Digital, our own agency, for service businesses that want a site built around leads, with the SEO, ads and GEO work that feeds it under one roof. The rest of the list is ranked by how many of our checks each agency turned up in on 12 September 2026. Everything below about another agency comes from that agency’s own site or from the search results. We have not rated the others on quality, because we cannot see their contracts, timelines or client results. Their order measures visibility, not skill.

## What the search data says about demand

Nobody searches for “best web design agencies australia” in volume. The closest exact phrase we have data for, “best web design agency australia”, sits at about 10 searches a month. The terms people really use are broader: “web design australia” at around 480 a month, “web design companies australia” at 390, and “web design agency australia” at 90 with a keyword difficulty of 60. The biggest is “website designer near me” at roughly 1,600 a month.

City searches dwarf the national ones. “Web design brisbane” runs at about 2,400 a month, “web design melbourne” at about 1,900, and “web design sydney” at about 1,000. Brisbane out-searches Sydney by more than two to one. For most people this is a local decision, and national lists get read during the comparison stage.

There is also a strong season. Across nearly every term we checked, March is the yearly peak and December is the floor. “Web design brisbane” went from 1,000 searches in December 2025 to 4,400 in March 2026. To have a new site live for the March rush, brief an agency in November or December.

## The 12 agencies

### 1. Uprise Digital (our top pick)

This is our own agency, and we put it first because we build websites to win enquiries, not just to look good in a portfolio. Uprise Digital is a boutique agency at 10 to 20 Gwynne Street in Cremorne, Melbourne, working with businesses Australia wide. Founder Lakshane Fonseka and the team have worked with more than 100 Australian businesses over four years, with a focus on four sectors: law, professional services, construction and energy (see [lawyers](/lawyers/)
, [builders](/builders/)
, [solar](/solar/)
 and [property consultants](/property-consultants/)
).

We build on WordPress and Webflow and write custom code where a template will not do. We pair the build with the work that makes a site pay for itself: landing pages built around one clear enquiry action, conversion rate optimisation, and reporting on leads, cost per lead and revenue rather than vanity metrics. Because the same team runs SEO, Google Ads, Meta ads and GEO, the site is set up from day one for the channels that will send it visitors, including getting named in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers.

The results are on our [case studies page](/case-studies/)
. AI Smart Glass is the first business ChatGPT lists for smart film installation, and reached more than $150,000 in monthly revenue within four months. Better Life Patios in Brisbane grew sales by 247 per cent in six months.

We are also one of only three agencies on this list that publish a real project price: a custom website runs $4,500 to $12,000 or more, and a web application $6,000 to $17,000 or more, set by scope and integrations. You own your accounts and data, and the first step is a free strategy call. Detail is on our [web design page](/web-design/)
.

### 2. Spark Interact (Sydney, NSW)

The only company that appeared in both of our checks. It ranked first organically for “web design agency australia” and ChatGPT named it too. The office is on Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD and they work Australia wide. WordPress is the main platform, with Shopify, WooCommerce and Drupal also listed. They are one of the few here who publish a number: [their homepage](https://www.sparkinteract.com.au/)
gives $3,500 to $5,500 as an average indication, with complex custom builds costing more.

### 3. Red Kite Design (Australia wide)

Held the top organic spot for the exact phrase “best web design agencies australia” the day we checked. The page names no head office and lists work across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and the Gold Coast. They build on WordPress, often with WooCommerce, and Shopify for stores. One detail matters for buyers: their own page says web design is not sold on its own, it comes inside a branding package. No pricing is published.

### 4. Digital Nomads HQ (Mooloolaba, QLD)

Second organically for “best web design agencies australia”, with their own agency list. The address is in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast and they serve clients Australia wide. Services run well past web design into SEO, Google Ads and social. Platforms named include WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento, plus custom development. They publish monthly retainer ranges rather than project prices: SEO from $1,500 a month, Google Ads from $1,000, full service from $3,000.

### 5. Stone Digital (North Sydney, NSW)

Appeared in the top ten for both of our Google searches, with a North Sydney address. They read as a build shop rather than a full marketing agency, and the platform list is short: custom WordPress, Shopify and WooCommerce. Custom WordPress packages start at $8,000 and monthly support plans at $480, both stated on [their own site](https://stonedigital.com.au/)
. Published support pricing is rare, and support is the cost most people forget to budget for.

### 6. Butterfly (Melbourne, VIC)

Ranked on page one for “web design agency australia”, with an address on La Trobe Street in the Melbourne CBD. This one is different. They do not push WordPress or Shopify. Their site talks about custom PHP and Python development, including Django and Wagtail, and their named sectors are government, education, healthcare and not for profit. They list WCAG accessibility audits and ISO 27001 certification. No pricing is published, and they are built for a larger buyer than a five page site.

### 7. Dilate Digital (Fremantle, WA)

Ranked on page one for “web design agency australia”. The address is on Queen Victoria Street in Fremantle, so this is the Perth option. Their site says they specialise in WordPress and Shopify. Web design sits inside a broad marketing offer covering SEO, Google Ads, Meta ads and copywriting. No pricing is published.

### 8. 23 Digital (Melbourne, VIC)

Ranked in the top twenty for “best web design agencies australia”. They list three offices: St Kilda in Melbourne, Baulkham Hills in Sydney and Murarrie in Brisbane. Their platform list is the longest here, covering WordPress, Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, HubSpot, Drupal and Sitecore, plus custom applications. Designers and developers are in house. No pricing is published.

### 9. Make My Website (Melbourne, VIC)

Appeared in the Google map results for “best web design agencies australia”, shown with a 5.0 rating from 297 reviews. The address is on Queens Road, Melbourne. Platforms listed are WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and BigCommerce. They also sell hosting, email hosting, photography and video, so one supplier can end up holding a lot of your business. That is the setup where the ownership questions further down matter most. No pricing is published.

### 10. Five by Five (Burleigh Heads, QLD)

Also appeared in the Google map results, with a 5.0 rating from 255 reviews and a Burleigh Heads address on the Gold Coast. WordPress is their stated tool of choice, with Shopify for stores, alongside SEO, paid ads, branding and hosting. Their site says they have completed over 3,000 web design projects and hold more than 250 five star Google reviews. Packages are named on the site but the prices are not.

### 11. Jimmyweb (Sydney, NSW)

ChatGPT’s first pick when we asked for the best agency in Australia for a small business, yet it did not appear in our Google top twenty for either search. That gap is the point. The address is on York Street in the Sydney CBD. They build on WordPress and Shopify, with WooCommerce for larger shops and Symfony or Laravel for anything closer to an application. Their site says they have been going since 2003. No pricing is published.

### 12. Chromatix (Camberwell, VIC)

Chromatix did not rank with its own site in our top twenty, but it was named first in two directory pages that did rank: Digital Agency Network and the Clutch list for Australia. The office is in Camberwell, Melbourne. They build on WordPress, Shopify and WooCommerce, offer headless CMS work, and put conversion rate optimisation front and centre. Their site says they have operated since 2009, have more than 15 full time staff and hold over 151 five star reviews. No pricing is published.

## Comparison table

| Agency | City | Main platforms | Publishes pricing | In Google top 20 today | Named by ChatGPT today |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Uprise Digital | Cremorne, VIC | WordPress, Webflow, custom code | Yes | Our top pick (our own agency, not self-scored) | |
| Spark Interact | Sydney | WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Drupal | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Red Kite Design | Australia wide | WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify | No | Yes | No |
| Digital Nomads HQ | Mooloolaba, QLD | WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, custom | Retainers only | Yes | No |
| Stone Digital | North Sydney | Custom WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce | Yes | Yes | No |
| Butterfly | Melbourne | Custom PHP and Python | No | Yes | No |
| Dilate Digital | Fremantle, WA | WordPress, Shopify | No | Yes | No |
| 23 Digital | Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane | WordPress, Shopify, Magento, Drupal and more | No | Yes | No |
| Make My Website | Melbourne | WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento | No | Map results only | No |
| Five by Five | Burleigh Heads, QLD | WordPress, Shopify | No | Map results only | No |
| Jimmyweb | Sydney | WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Symfony, Laravel | No | No | Yes |
| Chromatix | Camberwell, VIC | WordPress, Shopify, headless CMS | No | Directories only | No |

Only three of the twelve agencies on this list publish a real project price: Spark Interact, Stone Digital and Uprise Digital. That is the single clearest pattern in the whole list.

## Google and ChatGPT are giving different answers

Two things from our test are worth knowing. First, when we asked for the best web design agency in **Australia**, every business ChatGPT named was in Sydney. Not one Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide agency made the list. Outside Sydney, you are getting a Sydney answer to a national question.

Second, it did not build that list from agency websites. It cited three third party listicle blogs, and the price band it quoted, roughly $2,500 to $12,000, came from those same posts rather than any agency’s pricing page.

So run both checks yourself. Search Google for your city, ask an AI tool the same question, and look at the names in both. That overlap beats either list alone.

The same split applies to your own business once the site is live. Getting named in those AI answers is GEO, and a rebuild is a good moment to set a site up for it. Our [AI search visibility service](/geo/)
 explains what that involves.

## How to judge a web design portfolio

Portfolios are made to be looked at, not tested. Test them anyway. Pick three live sites and spend fifteen minutes on the following. You do not need to be technical.

### Speed

Run each site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights on mobile and look at the three Core Web Vitals. Largest Contentful Paint should happen within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint should be 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift should stay at 0.1 or under, measured across real visits. Those thresholds are published on [web.dev](https://web.dev/articles/vitals)
. Google’s own [page experience documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience)
says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but that good scores alone do not guarantee a top position. If an agency’s recent work is slow on mobile, that is the house style and yours will match.

### Mobile

Open the sites on your own phone, not a narrow desktop window. Is the phone number tappable. Does the menu open and close. Can you fill the contact form with one thumb. Is the body text readable without pinching. Most Australian service business traffic is mobile, so a site that only works on a big monitor is a portfolio piece, not a working asset.

### Tracking

Ask one direct question: “On this project, what did you set up to measure enquiries?” A good answer names Google Analytics 4 events for form submissions and phone clicks, and says who gets the lead notification. A vague answer about installing analytics usually means a base tag and nothing else, which shows traffic but not which pages produce enquiries. Our guide on [GA4 conversion tracking](/blog/ga4-conversion-tracking/)
covers what should be in place.

### SEO basics and conversion

Check three things. Does each page have its own title in the browser tab. Are there real headings with one clear H1 per page. Is there a sitemap at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml. That is the floor, and plenty of pretty sites fail all three, which means paying twice. Then look at where the enquiry action sits. If you scroll past three screens of imagery before finding a phone number or form, the site was built to impress other designers. Our post on [improving website conversion rate](/blog/website-conversion-rate/)
 covers what moves enquiries.

## What a proper quote includes

Two quotes for “a website” can be $4,000 apart and describe completely different work. Before comparing numbers, make both quotes answer the same questions in writing.

- **Page count, and what counts as a page.** Ten unique pages is not five pages plus five template location pages.
- **Who writes the copy.** The most common gap. If copywriting is not listed, it is yours, and projects stall for months on this one item.
- **Images.** Stock, your own photos, or a paid shoot, and who pays for the licences.
- **Design revisions.** A named number, and the cost of the eleventh change.
- **Mobile design.** Whether you see the mobile layout before build or only after.
- **Forms and integrations.** Where enquiries go, and whether a CRM connection is in scope.
- **Tracking.** Analytics, conversion events, and Search Console verification.
- **Redirects from the old site.** Old URLs must point to new ones. Skipping this is the fastest way to lose rankings on launch day.
- **Hosting, domain and SSL.** Who provides them, the yearly cost, and whose account they sit in.
- **After launch.** Bug warranty, monthly maintenance cost, response time, and the hourly rate for out of scope work.
- **Handover.** An admin login and a session on updating your own content.
- **Payment schedule.** Deposit, milestones, and the final GST inclusive total.

If a quote is one line and one number, it is not a quote. It is a starting position.

## Who owns the site and the domain

This is the trap, and it catches good businesses every year. Get these four answers in writing before you sign.

**The domain.** Your .com.au should be registered in your business name, under your own ABN, with your email as the contact. The .au rules say that when an agent applies on someone’s behalf, the person they apply for is the one recorded as the registrant, and a com.au name must belong to a commercial entity connected to it. The rules are on the [auDA website](https://www.auda.org.au/policy/au-domain-administration-rules-licensing)
. In practice, agencies sometimes register domains under their own account for convenience. Rarely malicious, still a problem the day you want to move. Ask for the registrar login, or ask them to confirm in writing that you are the registrant.

**The files and the database.** Ask who owns the design and code once the final invoice is paid, and get it in the contract as a plain sentence. Then ask the practical version: “If I left tomorrow, what would you hand me?” A good answer is a full site backup, the database and the hosting details.

**Proprietary platforms.** Some agencies build on their own in house system rather than WordPress, Shopify or Webflow. Nothing is wrong with that as a product. Just know that when you leave you take the content and the domain, not the site, and you rebuild. A low monthly figure with no upfront cost is usually this model, and the real cost shows up in year three.

**Your accounts.** Google Business Profile, Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads and email hosting should sit in accounts you control, with the agency added as a user. Not the other way around. Years of data get lost this way.

## Agency vs freelancer vs DIY builder

There is no universally right answer, only a right answer for your situation.

| Option | Typical range | Best when | Main risk |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) | Under $1,000 a year in subscriptions, plus your time | Testing an idea, under ten pages, you can write your own copy | Your time is the real cost, and the site stalls at “good enough” |
| Freelancer | Roughly $1,500 to $6,000 | You know what you want and can manage the project yourself | One person is one point of failure for support and holidays |
| Agency | Roughly $4,000 to $15,000, more for complex builds | The site is a main lead source and needs strategy, copy, design and tracking together | You pay for process, and a small brochure site can be over served |

Those ranges are ours, built from the only prices we could actually find today: Spark Interact at $3,500 to $5,500, Stone Digital from $8,000, our own $4,500 to $12,000, and the $2,500 to $12,000 band the AI answer quoted. Most agencies publish nothing, so treat any range as a guide and get your own quotes.

The choice is not permanent either. Plenty of businesses start on a DIY builder, prove the idea, then move to a proper build once enquiries justify it. That works, as long as you own the domain from day one.

## FAQ

### How much does a website cost in Australia in 2026?

From the prices agencies actually publish, a small business site usually lands between $3,500 and $12,000, with custom applications higher. Stone Digital publishes custom WordPress from $8,000, Spark Interact $3,500 to $5,500 as an average, and we publish $4,500 to $12,000. A freelancer is normally cheaper and a DIY builder cheaper again. The number moves with page count, whether copywriting is included, and how many systems the site talks to.

### Should I pick an agency in my own city?

It helps but it is not essential. Nearly every agency here works Australia wide and most projects run over video calls. Local matters more when you want a photo shoot at your premises or you prefer meeting face to face. If you want someone nearby, we have pages for [web design in Melbourne](/web-design-melbourne/)
, [Sydney](/web-design-sydney/)
 and [Brisbane](/web-design-brisbane/)
.

### WordPress, Shopify or Webflow?

WordPress is the default for service businesses with content and blogs, and it is what most agencies here use. Shopify is the default if you sell products and want payments, shipping and inventory handled. Webflow suits design led sites with a smaller maintenance load. Custom code makes sense when the site is really an application. The right question is not which is best, it is which one your agency builds in every week.

### How long does a website take?

A straightforward small business site is usually four to eight weeks from brief to launch, and larger custom builds run three months or more. The delay is almost never the design. It is content. Have your copy and images ready before the project starts, or pay the agency to produce them.

### Do I need SEO as well as a new website?

They are different jobs that overlap. A good build gives you clean structure, fast pages, correct headings, a sitemap and redirects from your old URLs. Ranking for competitive terms is separate ongoing work. The mistake to avoid is launching with no redirects, which can undo years of rankings in a week. For industry specifics, see our posts on [law firm website design](/blog/law-firm-website-design/)
 and [builder website design](/blog/builder-website-design/)
.

### Why do these “best agency” lists never agree?

Because they measure different things. Directories like Clutch rank on reviews and profile completeness. Agency written listicles usually put the author first, and this one does too: we put Uprise Digital first because we know exactly what our builds include and what they deliver for clients. Google favours whoever has the strongest page for the phrase, often a blog post and not an agency at all. AI answers pull from a few recent blog posts plus map data, which is why our test returned an all Sydney list. Use the lists to build a shortlist, then judge each agency on their portfolio, their quote and their answers about ownership.

## Where to start

Shortlist three agencies, ask all three the same questions about scope, tracking and ownership, and compare the written answers rather than the pitch decks. We are happy to answer every one of those questions in writing.

If you want to talk it through, our [website design agency page](/website-design-agency/)
explains how we scope a build, and the first step is a free strategy call. We are also happy to look at your current site and say whether it needs replacing or just fixing.
